Alan C. Logan, ND, FRSH is a board-certified naturopathic physician licensed in Connecticut. Great information, sometimes dry

I purchased this book to try and better understand why I have facial cysts and other acne problems. The book has been incredibly thorough - so thorough that sometimes it's difficult to read. I find myself reading parts several times. However, I feel like once I've understood what I'm reading it is very useful information. I have begun applying their recommendations to my diet and am seeing some improvements. I will continue following their scientifically-researched information and advice and I am hoping to see more improvements.
If you are serious about improving your skin, this book can help and offers a great deal of information. You have to be willing to read and understand it, though!

Excellent read but could be more comprehensive

This book is excellent. Very well researched and easy to read. However, as the authors themselves point out, the clear skin diet by itself is not sufficient to attain great skin. For example, one must also have a good cleansing routine - gently washing twice a day, morning and night, with warm water and a gentle cleanser and then applying a small amount of moisturizer.
However, I can tell you that adopting the clear skin diet - whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats like chicken, extra virgin olive oil, omega 3 rich foods like salmon, ZERO dairy, etc. - and having a good cleansing routine were STILL not enough to clear my own acne. Perhaps it is enough to combat acne for some people, but this was not the case for my moderate, sometimes severe acne. Did I feel like my acne got at least somewhat better from my new diet? Well, sort of. I will say that making better dietary choices definitely has made me feel like a more healthy person in general, and maybe I needed this book for that reason. My parents are even eating healthier as a result of my improved dietary decisions. This is especially good considering my mother is overweight and my father has high blood sugar. But I only started seeing a drastic difference in my skin when I started supplementing with vitamin b5.
I'm not here to flaunt about the benefits of vitamin B5, but to simply make the point that one of this book's glaring weaknesses is its lack of discussion about this vital vitamin. The book talks about a host of other vitamins and minerals and their relationships to acne, so why not discuss this critical one? This vitamin is extremely relevant particularly because many people (such as myself) have been able to clear their acne by supplementing their diets with it. There is also a very interesting study that substantiates its benefits by Dr. Lit-Hung Leung. Discussing the pros and cons of B5 would have certainly made for an interesting discussion and allowed the book to be more comprehensive. It also could have led some people to incorporate (more of) a vitamin into their diet that may, perhaps, significantly clear their acne.
Another interesting omission in this book is any discussion of vitamin B12. Studies have shown that high levels of B12 are linked to the development of acne on the upper body and face. This is relevant because many people consume energy drinks loaded with tons of B12 on a regular basis. It is very possible that this consumption of foods/drinks with high levels of B12 is aggravating the skin problems of those genetically susceptible to acne. High levels of B6 are also possibly linked to acne. The authors discuss B6, albeit minimally. It is stated numerous times that having a proper intake of B6 helps in the eradication of acne. But I think it would have been extremely helpful to emphasize that overconsumption of B6 is antithetical to clearing acne.
Another thing I must nit-pick. Many doctors prescribe NO-grain diets for acne sufferers and these diets have caused dramatic skin improvements. Whole grains are advocated in The Clear Skin Diet, but even whole grains are a controversial topic. The authors make it clear that whole grains are nutritionally superior to refined carbohydrates, and one would be hard-pressed to disagree. But what about a NO-grain diet versus a whole grain-diet? Which one is better for the acne sufferer? In a similar vein, are whole grains really THAT much better for you than refined carbohydrates (white bread, white pasta, etc.)? Keep in mind that in a NO-grain diet, fruits and vegetables make up one's daily intake of carbohydrates and these provide ample fiber and nutrients. This entire topic could have turned into an important discussion, yet this topic was completely untouched for unknown reasons.
I may seem overly critical of the book in these last couple of paragraphs. But, as you can tell from my 4/5 star rating, I think it is extremely informative overall and conclusively shows that diet can certainly play a role in acne formation. However, there are some things that this book could have done to make it even better.

Hard to read, good information

This book is hard to read and very technical, but the information has been well worth struggling through!
I started to get the typical acne one would have as a teenager, but unfortunately for me it never went away! At 26 I had tried everything from exercise to special cleansers to antibiotics, and nothing provided long-term improvements. I was particularly bothered with cystic acne, the kind that stays for weeks and is painful and bumpy under your skin. After a final round of antibiotics that made me feel sick all the time, I decided I was willing to try anything!
Luckily, I came across this book and decided to give it a shot. At the same time, I also came across Alicia Silverstone's book, The Kind Diet, which recommends a vegan diet for many health benefits (in addition to saving the planet and the animals). I read both books, and now have transformed from omnivore to vegan and have seen a dramatic improvement in my skin!
This particular book recommends you stay away from high fat-meats (beef, pork, etc.), fatty, processed foods, almost all dairy and sugar. It also recommends limiting your soy intake, and increasing healthy nutrients (like omega 3s). This is very similar to a vegan diet in that meat and dairy intake is non-existent and sugar/processed foods is discouraged.
Changing your diet drastically can be very difficult to do, but I think it is totally worth it! Every time I am tempted to eat some cheese or a taste of a burger, I look at my dramatically improved skin (which is getting better all the time) and it's easier to resist temptations. Reading The Kind Diet in addition to this book also helps because I think about all the good things I am doing for myself, the animals and the environment when I choose healthy foods for my skin. All that knowledge is a great incentive to keep going!
If you are having real, lifelong trouble with acne, I would definitely recommend following the advice in this book! I feel great, and giving up a few foods is a small sacrifice for having beautiful skin (in my opinion).
