Shaman (The Cole Trilogy Book 2), by Noah Gordon

Shaman is the prize-winning second volume of Noah Gordon’s celebrated Cole trilogy. It is as great a reading experience as The Physician. A New York Times Notable Book.

Dr. Robert Judson Cole travels from his ravaged Scotland homeland, through the operating rooms of Boston, to the cabins of frontier Illinois. In the wilderness he befriends the starving remnants of the Sauk tribe, who have fled their reservation. In the process, he absorbs their culture and learns native remedies that enrich the classical medical education he received at Edinburgh University. He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness. The details of how their deaf son manages to become a physician also, despite his handicap, and the story of how the Cole family is sucked into the bloody vortex of the Civil War and survives, makes an exceptional reading experience.

From Publishers Weekly
In this quietly absorbing tale, set in 19th-century Illinois, a doctor raises a family and confronts racial injustice and religious prejudice.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Gordon (The Physician, The Jerusalem Diamond, etc.) offers two fictionalized generations of doctoring on the Illinois frontier from 1839 to 1865, covering such medical history as the advent of hygiene and anesthesia. Rob J. Cole, political agitator in Scotland facing banishment to Australia, decides to migrate to the US. A doctor, he lands in Boston and can find work only in the Irish ghetto, making hovel calls for a charity. Disillusioned with the politics of the charity and intrigued with Indians, he heads west, stopping in Illinois at Holden's Crossing. Rob finds his Indians in the Sauks, who have fled the reservation and are now starving nearby. He treats and feeds them, becoming their ``white shaman,'' and eventually Makwa- Ikwa, their healer, goes to work with him. He travels the countryside, snipping off fingers and enlisting household help to pinch off spurting arteries. He removes kidney stones from a recluse named Sarah, who has holed up because she thinks she's dying from cancer. After he removes the stones, she blooms, and they marry. Sarah gives birth to a boy, and Makwa tags him ``Little Shaman.'' At age five, Shaman develops scarlatina and loses his hearing, a disability that makes his road to a medical practice difficult. Both father and son end up doctoring during the Civil War, the carnage of which is graphically described. The story moves too fast to develop either characters or scenes deeply, but it's a good read and has a refreshing approach to the frontier as part of a larger culture, not an isolated place where people did nothing but murder each other. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Sequel aren't supposed to be this good
By Charles Andrews
What a wonderful followup to The Physician. As a physician there is much to learn about the history of my profession, however, this story transcends the history. The characters are vivid and as in Rob J vol.I Gordon displays honestly characters with all their warts and makes us like them anyway. For me, this wasn't Shaman as much as it was Rob J. One of the best reads in quite some time. It is a story that sets its own tempo and one you won't want to rush through. I revisited many parts of the book while reading it. It won't be the last time I read it. I have added the hard cover to my permanent library. I encourage everyone to read both The Physician first than Shaman. Don't be daunted by the size of the books. Every page is a delight.
Ferrol Sams' Whisper of the River is the only sequel I have ever read that surpassed the original. Now I've read Shaman and that makes two

A sequel that is every bit as good-and in some ways better-than the orginal, despit an 800 year time gap!
By Lilly Flora
Before I actually read "Shaman" I was a little confused. How could a book have a sequel that was at all successful or keeping in the spirit of the book when the sequel is set eight hundred years after the first book. Reading it however I came to appreciate that I could not expect the book to be anything like "The Physician" really. On top of all the characters being different, the world had changed. New continents had been discovered in the interim and enormous life changing advances had been made in the field of medicine (which the much later generations of Cole's still practiced) and all of this changes the canvas the story was to be written on in many ways.

"Shaman" is really the story of two Rob. J. Cole's, father and son. The senior came to America fleeing political unrest and became a small town doctor in a newly settled Indiana town and formed close relationships with the Indian people who were displaced. The junior was his son, called Shaman by the Indians and who became deaf at the age of five but didn't let it stop him in his quest to be a doctor.

Because of the timeframe of the novel (the time before and just after the civil war) there is a great deal of the politics of the time which is one of the best aspects of the book. I learned more about the civil war and what were the real reasons behind it and the horror of it from this book than any history class I've ever taken.

I was especially surprised to learn that many American Jews sided with the south. I had always thought that as a group that is traditionally persecuted that Jews would find a bond with and side with other disenfranchised groups but it seems that like a kid being picked on by a playground bully, there is more relief then a sense of camaraderie when the bully finds a new target. Also the civil war was so little about slavery and so much about economics and not having a weak union.

The medical advances and theories of that time were also fascinating because they are inching closer to what we now enjoy as standard practice and are miles away from what the original Rob J. went so far and risked so much to learn, but are still primitive compared to today's standards. Cleanliness is just being considered to have an effect on health, vaccines are just cropping up and hospitals are often more dirty and contributing to disease than anything else.

Keeping with one of the themes of "The Physician" "Shaman" does have a faith aspect. Rob J. is a pacifist and swore never to hurt another human being and becomes deeply involved in the religion of the Indians and Shaman, with his love for a Jewish neighbor brings on a controversy of a mixed race marriage.

I loved this book just as much as the first and more in different ways. Noah Gordon is truly a talented author who combines history, science and faith to come out with a novel that is an astounding read. I really wish there were more in the series. (hint to the author-there were eight hundred years between these books Go back and fill some of that in!)

Five stars.

A doctor in a flourishing country
By Michael Benitah
This is the continuation of the 11th-century saga of the Cole family. Apparently, the Cole family formed a dinasty of doctors since then. This time, the story passes in the 19th century and the Cole family has immigrated to the United States and settled in Illinois, the Indian country. The story is not as interesting as in "The Physician", however, the book is better written with a nonlinear and more elaborate plot. Also, the book describes the beginning of the use of ether as anaesthetics, a turning point in the history of medicine and how Dr. Cole plays an important role in it.

Outstanding reading about God's DNA in each of us.

Outstanding book; a little difficult to get into at first, but then you're hooked. I never thought about God's DNA in each of us until Phil Munsey brought it to the forefront. I haven't finished the book yet but definitely thinking about ordering more of them to share with our adult children.

Must Read this Book!
By Sandy Vander Tol
Legacy Now I recently heard Phil Munsey discussing his book on TV and ran right away to Amazon to order it. I'm only half way through this book, but can't put it down. It has opened my eyes to the broader picture of life as lived generationally instead of one day at a time. We are passed the baton at birth to run our leg of the marathon race, and how well we do and what we accomplish is reflected in the next generation. If we choose honor and integrity, or selfishness and pride, build huge buildings or live simply and humbly, it is all passed down to the next generation. Everything about us matters and none of us were born by accident. God sometimes goes to great lengths to bring people into our bloodline contributing their DNA to create the person we become. All our gifts and talents for art, music, business, sports, whatever - comes from the many generations before us through the DNA we inherit and then pass down. Now I want to create a family tree to see where I came from and what qualities were in the personalities of the family members who came before me. I'm also pondering my place in the mix of generations and what beauty and blessings I can leave my children and grandchildren in the future.
Thanks Phil for writing this book! I love it and have purchased several copies to give away. (Now I have to finish reading it!)

From Ritual to Romance, by Jessie L. Weston

Acknowledged by T. S. Eliot as one of the chief sources for his great poem "The Waste Land," Jessie L. Weston's From Ritual to Romance remains a landmark of anthropological and mythological scholarship. In this book she explores the origins of the Grail legend, arguing that it dates back to a primitive vegetation cult and only later was shaped by Celtic and Christian lore.
To prove her thesis, Weston unites folkloric and Christian elements by using printed texts to prove the parallels existing between each and every feature of the legend of the Holy Grail and the recorded symbolism of the ancient mystery cults. Specifically, she finds the origin of the Grail legend in a Gnostic text that served as a link between such cults and later Celtic and Christian elaborations of the myth.
With erudition and critical acumen, the author provides illuminating insights into diverse aspects of the legend: the task of the hero; the freeing of the waters; medieval and modern forms of nature ritual; the symbols of the cult (cup, lance, sword, stone, etc.); the symbolism of the fisher king; the significance of such deities as Tammuz, Adonis, Mithra, and Attis; the meaning of the adventure of the Perilous Chapel in Grail romances; and much more.
Awarded the Crawshay Prize in 1920, this scholarly yet highly readable study will interest any student of the Arthurian legends, mythology, ancient religion, and Eliot's poetry.

Going to the Source
By Giuseppe C.
Because Eliot's "Waste Land" is taught in virtually every British and American lit survey course, the name "Jessie Weston" and the title "From Ritual to Romance" have become familiar to perhaps millions of readers throughout the world. However, if readers hope to get beyond the "trivial pursuit" question of the source to which Eliot was indebted and to a genuine understanding of the "Fisher King" myth, they will need to read that source for themselves. Though not a quick and accessible read, the book repays the reader's patience. Not only does it help bring Eliot's poem to life but it illuminates the poetic tradition from Chaucer to Eliot and makes more meaningful the numerous adaptations of the myth in modern culture--from David Lodge's "Small World" to Robin Williams' "The Fisher King." Not for a sophomore survey course, but definitely for any upperlevel course on Eliot or Arthurian legend.

A great place to start....
By A Customer
Jessie Weston's work on the Fisher King is a great starting point for the reader interested in the possible origins of the Fisher King myth. Weston has catalogued all of the many versions of the myth, the various important elements, and proposed origins. However, since there is no way to definitively prove the origins of the Fisher King myth, the reader should proceed with extreme caution when working with Weston's book. Since the Fisher King myth is highly derived and we have no manuscripts that mention the Fisher King before Chretien, Weston's hypotheses are highly speculative. Nevertheless, this book is a great "introduction" to the many aspects of the Fisher King myth. For the student of Arthurian literature, this book is a "must read."

This slim volume inspired many twentieth century writers
By A Customer
to produce some of their finest and most distinctive works. Weston's scholarly work first appeared almost 90years ago and is still inspiring readers. T.S. Eliot wrote footnotes referring readers of "The Waste Land" to this rare gem which puts "The Holy Grail" init's place, that of an important ritual that far preceded Christianity in the British Isles. John Steinbeck used it overtly in his only piece of historical fiction, "Cup of Gold," and others lined up in good company behind them. The story and its variants are fascinating and will inspire readers to revisit Frasier's Golden Bough. Sir Galahad, Sir Lancelot, King Arthur, Guinevere, the Fisher King and many others made their appearances as layer upon layer were added and peeled away from this legend spawned by people long gone (or absorbed?) from the British Islands and regions of France where the grail is said to have been secreted. Though Weston's style is British, academic, and the length of her immaculately grammatical sentences would put Faulkner to shame, the information is riveting (and makes one wonder how modern filmmakers of the Arthurian genre managed to research their stories and miss so much good stuff...).

Irretrievable (New York Review Books Classics), by Theodor Fontane

Opposites attract, and Helmut Holk and Christine Arne, the appealing married couple at the center of this engrossing book by one of Germany’s greatest novelists, could not be less alike. Christine is a serious soul from a devout background. She is brooding and beautiful and devoted to her husband and their two children. Helmut is lighthearted and pleasure-loving and largely content to defer to his wife’s deeper feelings and better wisdom. They live in a beautiful large house overlooking the sea, which they built themselves, and have been happily married for twenty-three years—only of late a certain tension has crept into their dealings with each other. Little jokes, casual endearments, long-meditated plans: they all hit a raw nerve.

How a couple can slowly drift apart, until one day they find themselves in a situation which is nothing they ever wished for but from which they cannot go back, is at the heart of this timeless story of everyday life. Theodor Fontane’s great gift is to tell the story effectively in his characters’ own words, listening to how they talk and fail to talk to each other, watching them turn away from their own true feelings as much as from each other. Irretrievable is a nuanced, affectionate, enormously sophisticated, and profoundly humane reckoning with the blindness of love.

Review

“[Irretrievable is] one of Fontane’s most idiosyncratic achievements, and certainly one of the finest literary autopsies of a foundering relationship…. The pleasure of the novel lies in its subtlety—in this case, a discreet exploration of marital psychology. Here again, trouble starts within and, like a dry rot, eats its way outward….But even after the couple ostensibly reconcile, there’s really nothing left; by the end of this mild yet anguished work, all that remains of the marriage is a lifeless residue of thwarted yearning—‘nothing but the willingness to be happy.’ As so often in the fiction of Theodor Fontane, that’s not enough to save the characters, but it’s a marvellous subject for a novel.” – Daniel Mendelsohn, The New Yorker

“A minor masterpiece of translation. . . ” —The Times Literary Supplement

“No writer of past or present stirs in me that kind of sympathy and gratitude, that immediate, instinctive delight, that reflex gaiety, warmth, and satisfaction, which I feel reading any of Fontane’s verse, any line of his letters, any scrap of dialogue.”
—Thomas Mann

About the Author

Theodor Fontane (1819–1898), novelist, critic, poet, and travel writer, was one of the most celebrated nineteenth-century German men of letters. He was born into a French Huguenot family in the Prussian town of Neuruppin, where his father owned a small pharmacy. His father’s gambling debts forced the family to move repeatedly, and eventually his temperamentally mismatched parents separated. Though Fontane showed early interest in history and literature—jotting down stories into school notebooks—he could not afford to attend university; instead he apprenticed as a pharmacist and eventually settled in Berlin. There he joined the influential literary society Tunnel ber der Spree, which included among its members Theodor Storm and Gottfried Keller, and turned to writing. In 1850 Fontane’s first published books, two volumes of ballads, appeared; they would prove to be his most successful books during his lifetime. He spent the next four decades working as a critic, journalist, andwar correspondent while producing some fifty works of history, travel narrative, and fiction. His early novels, the first of which was published in 1878, when Fontane was nearly sixty, concerned recent historical events. It was not until the late 1880s that he turned to his great novels of modern society, remarkable for their psychological insight:Trials and Tribulations (1888), Irretrievable (1891), Frau Jenny Treibel (1892), and Effi Briest (1895). During his last years, Fontane returned to writing poetry, and, while recovering from a severe illness, wrote an autobiographical novel that would prove to be a late commercial success. He is buried in the French section of the Friedhof II cemetery in Berlin.

Douglas Parme (1914–2008) was a lecturer in modern languages at Cambridge and a Lifetime Fellow of Queens’ College. He translated many works of classic and contemporary literature from French, Italian, and German, receiving the the Scott Moncrieff Prize for French translation in 1976. NYRB Classics publishes his
translations ofThe Childby Jules Valls, Afloat by Guy de Maupassant, and Nature Stories by Jules Renard.

Phillip Lopate is the author of the essay collectionsAgainst Joie de Vivre, Bachelorhood,Being with Children,Portrait of My Body, andTotally, Tenderly, Tragically;and of the novelsThe Rug Merchant andConfessions of a Summer.

Inevitably Irretrievable
By Charles E. Hepner
This is one of the best books I have ever read, possibly because we all have known people just like those described in the story. Fontane is sort of a German Anthony Trollope in that he describes the ordinary lives of his characters and thereby reveals their personalities. The setting is in Schlesswig, and the characters are members of German/Danish nobility, but that really doesn't matter; they could be from any walk of life. What matters is that each of them has a personality that interacts with the others to lead inevitably to the final outcome. The events that take place serve mainly to cause the facets of these personalities to become revealed.

The translation flows well and transmits Fontane's delightful irony that suffuses the book. Occasionally there was a line that caused me to laugh out loud; Fontane has a wonderful sense of the absurd. This may not be a book to everyone's taste because the characters form the plot and because the characters are revealed by their reactions to everyday events. That can be boring to some readers, but each event, though seemingly unimportant, has an effect on the ultimate outcome. Whatever you do, don't give up part way through; it needs to be read to the end.

Cold
By A Common Reader
I'm very sad to say that I could not finish this book. I gave up on page 90 (out of about 250), and about half of those ninety pages I read just to give the book the fairest chance I could.

I bought the novel after reading a glowing review of it in the New York Review of Books. Even more persuasive was the fact that Thomas Mann loved Fontane's writing, and I love Thomas Mann's. Alas, these were false signs. The NYRB review focuses on the relationship between the husband and the wife in the story (as does the synopsis on the back cover), but in fact the novel deals with a lot of political and social issues conveyed through dialogue that is trying hard to be lively but really isn't.

The dealbreaker for me in the end was the fact that the story didn't make me care about what happened to the characters. All the people in this novel are strangely lifeless. In theory, they should be fascinating, but on the page their thoughts and emotions come across as fabricated, not authentic. It's as though Fontane reasoned his way through this story rather than follow its natural, more intuitive direction.

It pains me to admit that I can't even say that I dislike this book. That suggests some emotional involvement with it. I simply don't care about it. It leaves me cold.

A Pearl on a Cloudy Day
By K. Egan
This book is a pearl on a cloudy day -- a lovely story of an avuncular, hen-pecked Count and his irritatingly pious wife in their castle in Denmark by the sea. It is a Victorian (1871) book of manners set in Victorian times (1850s) but it reads as lightly and humourously as any contemporary novel.

Excellent for use during therapy.
By M. C. Loftin
This is an excellent workbook for patients/clients to work on their difficulties with anxiety and fears/phobias. This book is based on the longest-standing, most research-supported techniques to treat anxiety. It teaches a person these highly effective therapeutic techniques in a step-by-step format. It is not an entertaining self-help book; it is a workbook that requires effort by the reader. It is a book that teaches a series of very effective, specific, practical skills or tools for a person to learn to control anxiety and be treated successfully for phobias. This treatment program takes lots of practice and daily work, but it has been shown in controlled scientific research to be very effective.

If possible, it is best to use this book during individual psychotherapy. An experienced clinical psychologist who uses cognitive-behavioral therapy will be able to help you use this book to get maximum benefit. This book is a combination of techniques from cognitive therapy and behavior therapy. Feel free to read about the basics of these types of research-supported treatments before purchasing this book. I would highly recommend this workbook to anyone motivated to work on their anxiety, fears/phobias. Other good titles to work on anxiety are written by Dr. David Barlow. Consider some of his other books as well.
