TWO BOOKS, SAME TITLE

I must be in a book-reading mood. I liked O'Reilly-Dugard's Killing Lincoln and decided to finish out their "Killing trilogy." Then I discovered Mansfield's book of the same title.

The subtitles on the two books differ, as well as the scope of their work. But both books are written in a popular "mystery style"---a la Grisham--which makes the subject approachable for those who do not dig into long-winded, heavily annotated historical and/or theological tomes. I like the latter but also appreciate the former on occasion.

Both books lean heavily on the material of the four canonical Gospels, and flesh out their stories with the latest anthropological, historical, cultural, geographical, sociological, archaeological knowledge about that region and that era. In this sense, both authors do well. We can quibble with some things, but on the whole, both books handle things well in this area.

Mansfield's book focuses primarily on the "Passion Week," starting with Christ's descent on a donkey from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem. Over the course of his book, he does flash-back a bit to earlier events in Jesus' life and ministry, but that is not his prime focus. O'Reilly-Dugard, on the other hand, toss in lots of history---the various Caesars, the political environment in the Roman Empire, Herod the Great and other Herods--so that we get a general idea of context for the Christ story. They sometimes succeed in demonstrating the impact that this larger world has on the specifics of the life and times of Jesus; even if not all of it is necessary, it is still nice to have some knowledge of history. And O'Reilly-Dugard, unlike Mansfield, intend from the start to tell the whole story of the life of Jesus of Nazareth---at least as much as can be done in a who-dun-it format that is not too lengthy for the I-Pad generation.

I do like that both books still to a basic historical read; when I read some of Mansfield's work to my Bible study group I was asked "Is this a Christian book?" and "Is this man a Christian?" several times--and I did not read long. You do not have to use "religious language" to discuss this era, and it meant a lot to me that both books avoid that.

I note that one negative reviewer said that Mansfield writes in a "see Spot Run" manner. There is something to that criticism. Neither he nor O-D take for granted their readers' level of knowledge. But since there are few presumptions, both writers have created works that will be comprehensible to everybody.

And both sets of books do have notable moments. I liked O-D's absorption with the larger picture of history. I also appreciated the reference to the astronomical magazine's article on the comet of 5 BC. My librarian was able to find it for me online. O-D also did a fine job of "fleshing out" the stories of Jesus as a boy of 12 in the Temple, and also describing the affection with which Jesus washed His disciples feet the night of the Last Supper--noting that washing feet was the duty of a slave or servant---just the opposite of the behavior of the glory-seeking disciples who jockeyed for position in His upcoming kingdom.

Mansfield's story begins with a compare-and-contrast scene: the representatives of Rome--the secular deity--entering Jerusalem from one end of the city, while Jesus of Nazareth---welcomed as the Messiah of Israel ("sacred" deity_ came from another direction. I also liked his juxtaposition of the "scream of the Lamb" as He hung on the cross with "the screaming of the lambs" as they were slaughtered in the Jerusalem temple. Powerful and thought-provoking image!!

One critic of these books was concerned that they resurrected the old stereotypes of the evil and corrupt Pharisees and High Priest. I think many realize that no group is monolithic in its thinking. Some Saducees and Pharisees supported Jesus, others did not. And we know that some rabbis also spoke against some of the temple practices. But it some rabbis spoke against certain Temple practices, as administered by the religious authorities of the time---does this not confirm that something was amiss with the system? The Gospels mention only what pertains to the goal of their story. They do not flesh things out.

And the corruption in the Jewish temple is not an opportunity for anti-Semitic thinking. It only highlights that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"--Jews and Gentiles alike.

O'Reilly offended a friend of mine for a TV interview in which O said he does not take the Bible seriously and does not believe that Jesus could have spoken from the cross. Inspite of that, O-D does have Jesus speak from the cross. However, the remarks are limited which means O-D pulled a "Jesus Seminar" and gave black, pink, grey, and red colors to the remarks in the various Gospel reports. The four gospels do not recall a Jesus who was especially chatty during the six hours of agony. The statements they do record may not have been delivered in a particularly stress-free tone of voice. They do not elaborate. But the final cry "It is finished!" -- was substantive enough to convince the centurion looking on that "this was the son of God." As Mansfield noted---and O'Reilly too, though in a different part of his book--such a statement was career-threatening, if not worse. O-D breeze by the events of the crucifixion once the story lands at Calvary, whereas Mansfield focuses a couple chapters on it.

A lot more could be said about each book---pro and con. I recommend reading both, if only for the chance to learn from each author. O-D leave unexplained the reason for Jesus' death, and this will --- and no doubt has---offended some. He was a guy who relied on "logic," per O....and an intellectual. What sort of intellectual allows himself to be so brutally murdered? What does it mean that He did that? If He was lucid enough, after a brutal beating, to spar with the High Priest and Pilate---what does this say about the possibility that He was also able to speak more on the Cross than O-D believes? And why did He die?.......Mansfield's work makes more sense of this, I think. O-D leave it, I suppose, up to the reader.

Great Example of Interpreting and Retelling an Ancient Text/Story

Emerald Buddha rocks

Emerald Buddha is a great continuation of Drake Ramsey's adventures. Not only are Allie and Spencer back, there are two new quirky characters that had me laughing non-stop. My favorite was Uncle Pete. He was just the right amount of wrong.

I've read and enjoyed all of Russell Blake's books. Each series has its own feel, so I know what to expect when I buy the next one. With Drake Ramsey, I know I'm gonna have fun.

A Jewel

A great follow up to Ramsey's Gold. The plot is fast paced with twists and turns, the action is fast and furious, writing is very descriptive, the characters are likeable and well developed and a nice touch of humor thrown in as well. The new characters are colorful and add a lot to the story. I hope to see more of Joe in future books, as he added a nice balance to Ramsey, Allie and Spencer. Looking forward to the next one in this series.

The second book in the Drake Ramsey series finds Drake, Allie, and Spencer once again searching for hidden treasure, this time in the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia. An ancient Khymer hoard of gold, jewels, and a magnificent jade statue, lost for centuries, is their goal. But they also are drafted by the CIA to hunt for a downed plane whose passenger was a senator's daughter and her boyfriend, a Chinese hacker who had penetrated the DOD computer system. The Chinese are also looking for them, wanting the information for themselves. Throw in the myriad drug runners, hostile foreign armies, and an expatriate American living in the jungle with a tribe of farmers, and you have another exciting page-turner from Russel Blake. Highly recommended!

A Useful Guide to Applied Self-Hypnosis

The book arrived promptly and in very good condition. I bought this book to replace several that I have given away. I liked Lecron's book because the methods for inducing hypnosis and most of the applications were clearly explained; the ones that I tried worked for me. I found post-hypnotic suggestion a particularly useful tool. Some of the successful applications were the use of hypnosis to reduce my extreme fear of flying, to be able to sleep and wake up refreshed in a different time zone, or to prepare for a business briefing. I have also used it for enhanced concentration. The psychology in some instances is antiquated and possibly offensive to some, however one must take into account the period and attitudes of the time it was written. I am sure there are a number of good, if not better sources on the subject, but this one was adequate for my immediate needs.

This IS the one you're looking for.

I bought my copy of LeCron's _Self-Hypnotism_ when I was a sophomore in college, back in the late 1970s. It has become dog-eared over the years since, and the binding is starting to come loose, but it is one of my most treasured reference books, and I own a LOT of reference books. This book was old and dated when I bought it, but even when I pick it up today and read through it, I realize that it sticks to certain fundamental concepts and truths that it will likely always have value.

This was the first book I ever bought on hypnosis or self-hypnosis. I've added several more volumes on this topic over the subsequent years, some of which are quite good, but I keep coming back to LeCron because of his easy, down-to-earth and comfortable writing style, his practical approach, and his useful applications. I have used his examples and techniques to successfully overcome a number of personal difficulties. I'm a musician and stage fright has always been a problem for me. I used his techniques to overcome it and to build confidence in my playing ability. It helped me to stop smoking. When working through a mountain of material I needed to assimilate for my Master's thesis, I turned my subconscious loose on the problem before turning in for the night, giving myself the suggestion that my subconscious would find what I was looking for. It worked while I slept and came up with an insightful and unique theory, which became the foundation for my Thesis. While not strictly self-hypnosis, it was because of what I learned of the workings of the subconscious mind from this book that gave me the idea to do this. I've even used his pendulum technique during exams. I recall asking my physics professor if he minded if I used a pendulum for an upcoming mid-term. Not only did he not mind, he encouraged me to do so, and even took a moment out from his lecture to mention the technique to the class and the theory behind it -- namely that the subconscious mind likely already knows the answers and using the pendulum was one successful technique at getting to the truth. I was not the only student who used a pendulum for that mid-term. :) I scored high on it, too, and I've made occasional use of this technique ever since.

My attitude toward LeCron and the topic of self-hypnosis is, "What have you got to lose?" Nothing. The book is cheap, it's a rather slender volume that reads easily, so it's something that can be knocked off in a weekend, and the techniques certainly can do no harm, but can only help. Once you've had a taste of success with this book, you'll want more and it will provide you with the foundation to achieve your goals. To me, LeCron is a must read. Pure and simple.

One of the best books of its kind....

One of my favorite books from decades ago. I think this is the beset book written on hypnosis that I have been able to discover. I have used it to quit smoking forty years ago. Through the years I have used it on less stubborn problems but it has become an effective tool in my arsenal of self-help techniques. I recommend the book highly.

The Most Important Book On Bipolar Disorder Written In The Last Ten Years

I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy before its publication. If you have had repeated depressions, depression that started before age 30, a depression that has gone on for years or depression that fails to be treated by antidepressant this book may save your life. If you don’t think you have Bipolar Disorder this book will help you decide. If you are depressed and have a relative with Bipolar Disorder this book is for you. If you have depression and mood swings this book is for you. Bipolar II sufferers have very little “highs” easily missed by professionals. Some times there are no “highs” at all and only irritability. If your mind just goes and goes at night when you are trying to go to sleep this book is for you. If you have been diagnosed Borderline there is at least a 50% chance you are Bipolar II and this book is for you. If you are have Bipolar II this book is for you. If you have a loved one with Bipolar II this book is for you. If you are a counselor, a primary care physician or a psychiatrist this book is for you. Don’t thing you see or treat Bipolar II this book is especially for you. Think that Bipolar is over diagnosed read this book and you will save lives.

This book is the first and only book dedicated to the most common type of Bipolar Disorder, Bipolar II. Bipolar II disorder represent as much as 7% of our population. It is as common or more common than Major Depression. All other books about “Bipolar” are about Bipolar I and don’t address the special needs of people who have Bipolar II. Outstanding introduction to the complexities of bipolar disorder

Disclaimer: I know and like Dr. Phelps. I have come to know him in my capacity as a librarian. As one of the librarians who daily struggle to keep up with his insatiable desire to keep up with the latest developments in the field of bipolar disorder, I can tell you that he knows what he is writing about. It is positively exhausting trying to satisfy Dr. Phelps' informational requirements when it comes to bipolar disorder because he reads about every conceivable aspect of it, from the molecular and genetic to the everyday clinical.

Want to read a book on bipolar disorder and associated conditions by someone who somehow manages to combine a droll, folksy prose style with unrivaled expertise? This is the book for you, whether you are a primary care doctor seeing a patient with symptoms of depression or are a non-medical person bewildered and worried by aspects of your own behavior or by those of someone you know and, perhaps, love.

This book performs a major public service by providing an approachable, easy-to-follow guide to a very complex subject: the differences between Bipolar I and Bipolar II and between those two conditions and unipolar depression. Dr. Phelps delineates the role of anti-depressants in the treatment of all three conditions and his dissection of the intricacies of the debates and controversies over these matters is both illuminating and surprisingly funny.

Sometimes he can be endearingly bossy, such as telling us the readers to read certain sentences again and what NOT to do. He also makes clear what he does not know and what is not known by anyone at this stage. That, too, is important.

Amazing

I am a Psychiatrist, very interested in mood disorders, I got to this book firt by reading Dr. Phelps web page, which I strongly recomend to everybody, Its just amazing, I never have read anything with that capacity of clarity, he is abble to make look easy the more complicated topics, like the biology of mood disorders,chronoterapy approches,treatment,etc.. I live in Colombia and work in a Mental Health's Hospital and one of my collegues saw the book and I think delayed one hour all of his activities just reading.. as he said ,this book is addictive.. I think the author has one of the smartest way to conceptualize mental disorders I ever read, I am very satisfied to have buyed the book , I am waiting to have the kindle version.
