but I have to say I absolutely LOVED it! I guess you could say it's sort ...

I had never heard of the Danish concept of "hygge" before this book, but I have to say I absolutely LOVED it! I guess you could say it's sort of the same concept as "mindfulness" but not exactly. If the idea of slowing down, of appreciating the small things in life and seeing the beauty in everyday moments appeals to you, you will love this book!

I found this book while searching for Hygge after an interview on NPR with Meik Wiking. He recently released The Little Book of Hygge. After reading the reviews for that book, I chose this one instead. I'm glad I did!

The Cozy Life is a joy to read. Edberg shares her understanding of hygge through autobiographical storytelling, philosophical tidbits and action steps. Hygge is a lifestyle of coziness and a comforting state of mind. This Danish concept is found in many mindful living messages. This Cozy Life will help you to find the simple joys in life. The greatest gift this book provides any reader: sure fire methods for alleviating cell phone separation anxiety. Any of us with a smart phone have likely encountered the moment of feeling anxious without our beloved mobile device. Through our desired connection to people via mobile internet, we tend to disconnect from ourselves. Without moments of silence and peace that we only find when we are disconnected from our screen, we lose the connection to the soul and self. Edberg invites you to put down the phone and pick up a mixing bowl, a paint brush, or project. Immerse yourself in the present and invite more "face time" in face to face encounters. Hygge is more than coziness, it's warmth and connection.

This book could have easily been titled "The Soul Life." I think the American concept of Soul has parallels to Hygge. It's about feeling true and happy with one's self, being open and sharing in one's community. A Hygge life is authentic. Buy it!

As someone who has grown to dread the winter months, this was just what I needed. After reading this, I even decided to redo our livingroom to make it extra cozy for this year-- soft blankets, fuzzy rugs, and candles. It makes such a difference. The best part of advice is staying connected with loved ones (year round, really) and building a sense of community-- there have been countless studies showing that that alone is one of the biggest pillars of happiness and longevity. I'm finally looking forward to the long winter now, and all of the tips will be put to good use!

That Martin Heidegger supported National Socialism has long been common knowledge. After developing a framework that clearly outlines the interrelation of Nazism and Heidegger's philosophy, Rockmore analyzes the famous rectoral address the philosopher delivered in 1933 upon becoming rector of the University of Freiburg. In that speech Heidegger sought to ground politics in philosophy. Rockmore examines the inseparable relation of politics and philosophy in Heidegger's Being and Time, the recently published Contributions to Philosophy (written from 1936 to 1938), and the interpretations of H�lderlin, Nietzsche, and technology.

In his conclusion Rockmore considers the ongoing discussion of Heidegger's thought and Nazism in France. Combining extensive documentation of the Heidegger controversy with philosophical and historical analysis, this book raises profound questions about the social and political responsibility of philosophy.

About the Author
Tom Rockmore is Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University. His books include Fichte, Marx, and the German Tradition (Southern Illinois, 1989) and Habermas on Historical Materialism (Indiana, 1989). He co-edited the translation of Heidegger and Nazism by Victor Far�as (Temple, 1989), whose publication in France in 1987 sparked the current Heidegger controversy.

Provocative Criticism of Heidegger

This well written and closely argued book is a stringent criticism of Heidegger's philosophy and its relation to his notorious embrace of Nazism. Rockmore argues that Heidegger's involvement with the Nazis was hardly the result of personal quirks or coercion but rather a product of his philosophical preoccupations. Rockmore bases his conclusions on a careful reading of the relevant texts, analysis of the main features of Heidegger's thought, and relevant historical background. For example, while Heidegger liked to present his thought as a recovery of the insights of pre-Socratic Greek thinkers, Rockmore shows that Heidegger was influenced by the racist and anti-rationalist Volkish ideologies prevalent in Germany. Rockmore's case is well argued and others, notably Heidegger's recent biographer, Rudiger Safranski, reach identical conclusions. It is clear as well that Heidegger abandoned overt Nazism not because of any real ethical concerns but rather because the Nazis would not accomodate Heidegger's ideas for how German society and education should be run. This book also contains damning criticism of the individuals who have defended Heidegger; including members of Heidegger's family who have apparently restricted access to potentially damaging documents; Heidegger's disciples, some of whom have attempted remarkable ways to explain away Heidegger's Nazism; and a number of other philosophers who seem to be unable to stomach the fact that the person they trumpet as the great thinker of the 20th century was a Nazi. Heidegger emerges as a brilliant and remarkably egotistical man inhumanly dedicated to the pursuit of a small set of ideas, some of which may be great insights, but literally careless of human rights, human dignity, and the physical suffering of the great majority of humanity. One criticism of Rockmore's book is that Rockmore, though usually very careful with terminology, is sloppy about use of the term Nazi. Rockmore argues that Heidegger, after his withdrawal from overt Nazism, remained dedicated to an "ideal Nazism". It would be better to restrict the use of term Nazism to the actual acts and (often contradictory) programs of the Nazis. As Rockmore shows clearly, Heidegger was preoccupied throughout his life with ideas that were anti-humanist, anti-democratic, and Volkish in character. This puts Heidegger in the same general category as the Nazis but referring to "ideal Nazism" is a bit confusing.

Tom Rockmore has radically overturned 20th century philosophy models by challenging Martin Heidegger head-on.
Most famous writers of 20th century philosophy imitate Heidegger's terms, 'in-the-world,' and 'them' and other aspects of his existentialism. Heidegger's Nazi affiliations are most often swept under the rug and even today many of his writings are kept secret by his Estate.
Tom Rockmore courageously joins the battle to expose Heidegger as a Nazi thinker -- and not as an unwilling Nazi participant as his followers like to soft-soap these issues. But Dr. Rockmore is not seeking sensationalism or merely political battles, rather, he is an erudite philosopher himself with some penetrating insights into the origins and weaknesses of Heidegger's positions on the issues.
The 20th century is filled with defenses of Heidegger the man and the writer. His nakedness is praised as beautiful attire by some of the key writers of the past century. Tom Rockmore has performed a revolutionary act by exposing this nakedness and hypocrisy, not only politically but in the realm of theory.
This is one of the most interesting books available on 20th century philosophy.

Good Intro to Swift missing Xcode shortcut summary

This is a good solid book on SWIFT 2. I am half way through the book. I would have given it 5 stars but there are frequent forward references to concepts that have not been covered. The kindle version does not have the X-Code shortcut summary that the hardcover has.

A very effective into to Swift

I am a longtime C++ and Objective-C engineer who wanted to get up and running with Swift. I was worried about the basic/advanced balance of the book. I didn't need eight chapters on variables but I also didn't want them to jump into generics right off the bat. The book does a very good job of walking you through the entire language one topic at a time, ramping you up in a very sane way. Highly recommended.

Learn Swift . . . swiftly!

These guys never disappoint! I learned iOS and Objective-C from them, got a few apps on the App Store and halfway through the design of an idea that got a little too big for my skills. Then Apple came along and torpedoed everything with a strange new bare-bones language called Swift. I dropped out for a few years to let the language mature, and it has. Using this book to rekindle my hobbyist approach to programming, and this book is, well, fun! Nothing quite like that feeling when you beat the challenges they set for you at the conclusion of each chapter. Highly recommended!

This is a well-researched yet easy-to-read book. In it, the author documents the tenacious opposition of the most powerful business associations to full employment, describing the many lucrative other benefits they reap from keeping large numbers of the population unemployed. He shows how unemployment is created by the rising inequality in income and wealth, and the actions that big business takes to create millions of layoffs. Those actions include: introducing advanced technology, exporting of American jobs, merging of corporations and importing cheap labor.

No less serious for working people are the periodic interest rate increases of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Mr. Stone goes on to delineate unemployment's many outrageous consequences for working people and their families, as well as for all other Americans.

He also shows how the creation of a full employment society will require dealing with the bitter opposition to it by the business class. A variety of badly needed projects can then be carried out to create a vibrant and healthy society that could provide work to all the presently jobless millions. The funding for such a program can come from a steep reduction in the incredibly swollen and wasteful military budget, from the billions of tax dollars that corporations used to pay in the past but are no longer paying, and from the billions of tax dollars the jobless would pay once employed.

didn't have what i needed

maybe i was sent an old copy as the cover is very, very different than what is shown.

does have the serial numbers for hundreds of cars...but not for the one car (major usa manufacturer)and year that i needed. unfortunately no way to see if the book has the numbers one needs before one buys it.

Not worth the price and unhelpful descriptions :(

If you were confused by what multipe emojis were, then this would be the book for you. I was looking for a fun explanation of what each emoticon was thinking, but this book just gave me a boring description of what each emoji looked like. For example, for the emotican that doesn't have a mouth, I was expecting: … but basically got: face with no mouth. This was upsetting because obviously the emoji was a face with no mouth. I wanted something less obvious. Overall I am not very happy with this book

A concise, well edited, humorous and quick read for artists, students and arts professionals.

As a young artist and nonprofit arts professional who graduated with an art degree, I wish I could have read this book when I was in undergrad! It has still been an insightful and timely read for me 10 years after graduating. I thought it would be more of a how to guide and describe specifically how to make money in art, but it is much more. The book is a collection of personal essays from working artists who each describe their personal challenges, practices and approach to work life balance. I have appreciated the sincerity and honesty of the essays.

There are many books about arts marketing and trade publications offering specific advice for specific arts markets and strategies for making a living as an artist. What's different about Living and Sustaining a Creative Life is the personal approach, which is helpful for understanding how working artists have individually designed their careers with work-life balance and economy in mind. The art field is truly unique encompassing such a wide variety of talents, interests, and micro economies. I've enjoyed the variety of perspectives and experiences compiled in this collection. The life of a working artist is as much about lifestyle as it is about breadwinning and I think this title articulates both the challenges and possibilities of earning a living with one's art, while maintaining creative perspective, practice, and having a life.

The essays are concise and well edited, it's a quick read, with a human voice, peppered with a few swear words and humor, while maintaining seriousness, depth and being informative. Most of the essays express struggle at different levels, some overcome and some outstanding, but without a negative or depressing vibe.

If you're and artist looking for a bit of insider art business advice, without specific numbers or a bit of creative self help, without a cheesy angle or positive inspiration and ideas to keep trucking in your arts career, this collection of essays is for you. I would highly recommend this title to art students or as a gift for a recent graduate looking for what to do next. University art school educators will find excellent contemporary group discussion points to prepare students for entry into the field “professionally”. A seasoned artist will hopefully find comfort in the like minded struggles we all share and feel motivated reading the well written, entertaining behind the scenes essays.

Interesting idea

Some of these 40 essays are better than others, perhaps due to the fact that they are written by visual artists, not writers (I believe there is a difference). Also, many of them didn't have much depth. It would have been nice to have included more older artists and those not deliberately following a "career" path. After a while, there seemed to be a sameness about them. I was hoping to find a variety of distinctive approaches and viewpoints.

There are many wonderful things about this book. Each artists chapter reveals the layers of what it means to balance life as an artist. The term working artist can mean many, many things. Defining what is a "working artist" is indeed one of the great intangibles of learning what it is to be an artist. The bottom line is we all figure it out and define it in different ways. Sharon's book illuminates the various ways artists define what it is to be and do and function as a working artist. The essays, most narrative in form, peel back the layers of daily life and work. They reveal the sometimes precarious balance that artists walk with their daily practice, their business and their personal lives. I wish I'd had this book when I was at NYU. It would have demystified the artistic world I so desperately wanted to be a part of. Now many years later I have figured out the daily ins and outs of what it means to move through life as an artist. But back in school this book would have been an invaluable tool in putting a creative life together bit by bit as it works for the individual. I say it should be required reading for art students of all disciplines. It's filled with insight that one only gets from experience. Its a rare gift to get an inside view of the path to come. I loved every page. Wonderful book.

This one is a total homerun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I admit it... I am an unrepentant Tom Peters fanatic and have been for 20+ years. But even with that said, there have been a few (very few) of Tom's books that I felt were...uh... "Less-than-excellent."(small "e") So it was with a bit of trepidation that I sat down to read his newest book: "The Little BIG Things - 163 Ways to Pursue EXCELLENCE." At 507 pages of main text, it is a significant commitment for many readers to undertake the study of this book weighty tome... and I promise you it is worth every single page of it! I read it cover-to-cover (twice) in the span of two days of flying to meet with clients. I simply could NOT put it down, as I was greedy to get to the next page of TP wisdom and wisecracking. If you are a Tom Peters devote' you will recognize much (nearly all) of what this book contains... and that is just fine. It is filled with a relentless parade of "TP's Greatest Hits" that keep slapping you in the face and pushing you to think, adjust, change and take action. If you are a business leader of ANY kind - you MUST read this book. I absolutely GUARANTEE you will find not one... not two... but 20 or 30 game-changing ideas that could truly take your business and your career to a completely new level. As someone who has read a MINIMUM of 100 - 120 business books a year, every year since 1989, (and it all started with In Search Of Excellence!) I will tell you with NO hesitation that "The Little BIG Things" is now in my top 5 all-time favorites. YES - it is that good! Mr. Peters... this one is a complete homerun!!!!!!!!!

Very helpful and very useful with one caveat...

I've been listening to Tom's "The Little Big Things" and reading along on the Kindle version. Tom likes to zero in on simple ideas that can have a powerful impact on the success of a business (small, medium or large). This is a really healthy approach to helping businesses succeed. Folks like to read, absorb and apply...not spend all kinds of time trying to understand graphs, analyses, and information presented all-too-often intended to impress than to assist. So Tom scores very big points throughout in getting us immediately useable information.

There is one item I strongly disagree with in the book. Tom says:

"I argue here and elsewhere that the *only* effective source of innovation is pissed-off people! Hence, bite your tongue and cherish such misfits!" (the word *only* was in italics presumably for emphasis)

I'm sure some points of innovation come from pissed-off people, and I imagine Tom has considerably more examples of this than I do. But I'm also sure superb innovation has come from those not pissed-off at all. This I've seen with my own eyeballs on quite a few occasions. And sometimes these pissed-off misfits are just that: pissed-off misfits with no innovation whatsoever in their space. Quite the contrary, some are involved with undoing innovation, creativity and productivity. So I'm not on the look-out for pissed-off misfits nor should you be. Be on the look-out for innovation in whatever form it presents itself. Then check it out, test it out and use it liberally when you see it gets the desired results.

Being an automotive management major, I find that a substantial amount of the practices, ethics and concepts detailed in this book could be applied to a future position of mine. They're not something I've come across yet, but would definitely apply to my ongoing and future career.
