Perfect for daily exercises.

I've been looking for a book that would have a good amount of exercises that don't just give a situational prompt for you to work from. Both of Kiteley's books have exercises that help you with different elements of writing as well as providing useful tips and examples. I would recommend this book to any writer who is looking to expand on their style and practice their flexibility.

This book was a disappointment. I have ceased from purchasing any more how to write books. They all say the same thing. If you have any book on writing fiction, it probably covers the same ground as this one. I gave it three stars because there's nothing wrong with the advice. It's just not the least bit new or different

It's a good one. Get this. It will help you write your paper and teach you what Westerners don't know.

Pretty good read. Easy to follow. Secondary source, but a well thought-out one. Has a few minor discrepancies between the Fatimid to Abbassid Caliphate transition in Egypt. Overall, well-written and usable for research purposes. It has the best time line of the Mamluks from the death of Mohammed(pbuh) to the destruction by the Ottoman Empire.
The single best resource for English speakers is still David Ayalon.

Good history of the Mamluks

Waterson's book is a good overview of the Mamluk period of Middle Eastern history. It concentrates on the earlier period 1250-1330 when the state was at its most vibrant and facing many external threats, especially the Mongols. The coverage of the later history is less complete, and almost perfunctory in places, which is a shame as the decay of empires is just as intersting as their time of strength, and in some ways at least as important. Waterson draws from many sources, especially the period manuscripts on combat (the furissiya), and avoids the Eurocentric view of history well.

My main gripe, considering that he is discussing the history of a military dynasty, is that he sometimes is woefully misinformed in military facts and terminology. He does not understand the difference between a compound bow (the term he uses throughout, and which only applies to a type of bow developed in the twentieth century) and a composite bow. On page 270 he states that the muskets deployed at Waterloo had a range on only 130 metres (this should mean effective range only; the maximum range would be over 400 metres) while a light arrow could be fired up to 250 meters (which is correct). In the same paragraph he states that arrows are easily made while bullets require a developed industrial base; good arrows actually require a high skill level to make, and the drawing together of materials from many areas, while bullets are actually easier to make if the lead is available in bar form. The complexity is more in the production, storage and delivery of the powder, and the creation and maintenance of the guns.

Aside from these flaws, which are relatively minor, this is a very readable book that covers the subject well, without becoming pedantic or boring.

About the Author
Educated in geography and town planning at Liverpool University, Professor Ian Masser has been involved with the INSPIRE Directive since its beginning. He was founder chairman of the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE) and president of both the European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information (EUROGI) and the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI). His publications include 18 books and more than 300 published papers and conference presentations. He authored the first and second editions of Building European Spatial Data Infrastructures (Esri Press 2007, 2010).

Joep Crompvoets is a professor at KU Leuven Public Governance Institute (Belgium) and secretary-general of EuroSDR—a European spatial data research network linking national mapping agencies with research institutes and universities for the purpose of applied research. He has been involved in several projects related to the development of the INSPIRE Directive and SDIs around the world. He has written numerous publications dealing with SDIs, GIS, and e-governance.

Emphasizing Solutions to a Tragic Tale of Loss

There should have been a subtitle to this book, such as "Stopping the Loss" because it not only illustrates to breadth and speed with which we are permanently losing important biodiversity, but also addresses how we could be stopping it. Recent studies chronicle the dramatic decline of animals on earth, even if humanity has not chronicled the extinction (or recognition) of every vanished species. This graphic book is special in that it:
- Is the first to show how loss of biodiversity is tied to human expansion;
- points out the importance of not just species but population extinctions
- illustrates the global scale of conservation issues, from Zimbabwe and China to the US and Australia.

-Graphically illustrates what humanity is losing.
- Shows how ecotourism, new agricultural practices, even hunting sometimes, help save biodiversity.
- Emphasizes solutions, from preserving species & ecosystems to tackling overpopulation & consumption.

Important and Beautiful!

A surprisingly beautiful book considering the ominous title. John Holdren, President Obama’s science advisor, criticized the Pope’s Encyclical for being too dismissive of “the role of the size of the human population in …crowding out the rest of creation.” THE ANNIHILATION OF NATURE is a magnificent book that makes no such mistake. It summarizes the consequences of humanity’s launching of the sixth mass extinction, the first since an extra-terrestrial body wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. With a series of glorious photographs and graphic stories it shows what we’re losing from the two best-known groups of animals: mammals and birds. It also frankly discusses the only basic cure to the extinction crisis: “shrinkage of Earth’s human population and reduction of per capita consumption by the already rich.” Perhaps most important it emphasizes a problem few are aware of, a massive wave of population extinction. It is destroying the critical natural services we all depend upon. Professor Ceballos and his colleagues have done us all a great favor – supplying a beautiful book that carries a critical message. A savings tip on every page!

This book is excellent for two reasons.
1. It's easy to use. Right in the front of the book are the things you need to know right away: tax law changes, an index of life events that might change your tax status (in addition to table of contents) and the page where you'll find that info, and the top 10 tax saving tips.
2. It's full of savings information. Each page has a savings tip highlighted in blue with "Tax Saver" tips -- all of which are really useful.
Important for anyone who is prudent enough to be concerned about tax savings year-round.

About the Author
Epictetus (AD 55 – AD 135) was a Greek sage and Stoic philosopher. He was born a slave at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present day Pamukkale, Turkey), and lived in Rome until banishment when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece where he lived the rest of his life. His teachings were noted down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses. Philosophy, Epictetus taught, is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are determined by fate, and are thus beyond our control, but we can accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. Individuals, however, are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline. Suffering arises from trying to control what is uncontrollable, or from neglecting what is within our power. As part of the universal city that is the universe, human beings have a duty to care for all fellow humans. The person who follows these precepts will achieve happiness and peace of mind.

The Golden Sayings of Epictetus

I'm in love with this book. When I first finished it, I immediately turned back and began again. I have some doubts whether this truly is by Epictetus (the style and some of the references make it seem like a pseudepigraphical work), but doubtless, it's a true gem. It seeks to remind you that before we, as individuals or as a race, seek to remedy our problems in the external world, we should have a care to achieving freedom, courage, and greatness of mind within. Although by this late date much of the initial vigor and authenticity of the great early Greeks such as Heraclitus, Anaxagoras, and Diogenes had given way to derivative codified systems, in this work we find the philosopher's life being lived undiminished, with a broad mind, a powerful body, and an unfettered soul. We, modern citizens of the western world, with our paltry souls, shriveled from long disuse, flat and bloodless from discharge of desire, have very much to learn.
I recommend it highly to anyone looking for a way to improve their existence. Giving it careful study will give you a direction in which to go in order to obtain wisdom. And wisdom is like a mountain spring to him who of it drinks; for it flows on and ever more, and never goeth dry.

They missed the point

While I can't argue with the price, I do take issue with the content. Epictetus was a great philosopher, but you wouldn't know it from the selections of "golden sayings". The editor gives these quotes with no context, making for a very disjointed read. Also, the editor was also apparently more interested in Epictetus' theological musings. Now there's nothing wrong with theology but it would have been nice if it were titled as such. It would have been even better if stoic philosophy found its way in at some point.

These golden ideas comes from his lessons on Stoicism that
was recorded by one of his students. The philosophy is deceptively
simple, but effective. These simple tactics are helpful in facing the daily
stresses of life.
