     To add to the puzzle, Tyler begins almost immediately to receive mysterious letters recounting terrible crimes far away. He realizes that he is not only seeking the murderer, but that the horrors of the war are closing in on this place that was meant to be a refuge.
     Maureen Jennings, beloved author of the Murdoch novels that inspired the popular TV series (known as The Artful Detective in the US), surpasses herself in this vivid portrayal of wartime Britain, brilliantly blending a classic murder mystery with a deeply human story of how the effects of war live on far from the fields of battle.

About the Author
Born in England, MAUREEN JENNINGS emigrated to Canada as a teenager. The first Detective Murdoch mystery was published in 1997. Six more followed, all to enthusiastic reviews. In 2003, Shaftesbury Films adapted three of the novels into movies of the week, and four years later the Murdoch Mysteries TV series was created; it is now shown around the world, including in the UK, the United States (as The Artful Detective), and much of Europe, as well as on Canada's national broadcast network, CBC TV. Third book in the series...

Readers of mysteries know that there are different styles within the genre. One of those are the "murders done in a confined space and almost anyone can be the murderer (and the victim, come to that!); sort of like "Murder on the Orient Express". "No Known Grave", by Maureen Jennings, is the third in her "Tom Tyler" series and offers exactly that plot and a similar cast of potential victims and murderers.

The "Tom Tyler" series is set in WW2 England. I have not read the first two - though I think I will do so - but the protagonist is a "Great War" veteran who is working as a country policeman during the war years. He has moved to a small town, Ludlow, and in his third day in town and on the job, he is called in to investigate a murder of a blind man and his son at a convalescent hospital. Among the patients at this closed hospital are men and women grievously wounded in the war - either in battle or in bombing raids at home. Most of the patients are blinded and amputees; they are being cared for at a "stately home" set up to provide recovery services. The convalescent home is run by an order of Anglican Sisters, who are also nurses.

Jennings does an excellent job at setting up her time and place. St Anne's, the secluded home, is distant enough from the battles and bombings, but close enough to the emotional anguish and physical frailties that the war has brought. Why are such disparate people as the blind father and his son and the old nursing nun cut down in violent fashion? What do a series of letters sent to Tom Tyler describing massacres in an unnamed place, where the murdered "have no graves", do with the these murders?

"No Known Grave" is a good look at war-time England where police work still needs to be done. Maureen Jennings has written a good, insightful mystery.

Murder in the midst of the severely disabled

This is an amazing setting for a murder mystery – a World War II hospital run by Anglican nuns who are nursing shell-shocked patients with horrible scars and mutilations. Some are in wheelchairs. Some are blind. Most are severely traumatized. We get to know them all when Detective Inspector Tom Tyler arrives to investigate the murder of a staff member and one of his sons.

Sergeant McHattie was gassed and blinded in the Great War. He was a good man teaching some of the patients massage, which it was hoped might be a viable career for them. Tyler finds it hard to imagine why anyone would want to kill the man, let alone kill his teenage son. When more tragedies ensue, Tyler is really stumped.

The atmosphere of the hospital, and the personalities of the nuns, are all very fascinating. Among the many constables, one is particularly interesting – a young woman who drives a motorcycle at maniacal speeds, speaks with an upper crust accent, and shows promise as a detective. Women were new to the police force at that time, and even the liberal-minded Tyler is not always sure how to treat her.

A romance blossoms among the disfigured patients, and this is a charming diversion.

Although I found the motive for the crimes a bit astounding, I enjoyed the investigation and got very caught up in the experiences of the characters.

A real page turner!

Terrific book. Great plot and a wonderful rendering of an awful incident in WWII history. Jennings characters are well drawn and as the Globe and Mail said, it does remind you of Foyle's War--how the incidents of the battlefield reach back into the homefront. Set in a hospital for badly scarred (both emotionally and physically) patients in Ludlow run by Anglican nuns, the story centers on three murders and a kidnapping and reaches a climax in a Norman era church, tied up neatly with a twisted plot involving the assassination of Reinhart Heydrich and the murders in a razing of the town of Lidice in Czechoslovakia by the Gestapo in retaliation.

This is the real deal on chord theory and voicings

This is not like 90% of other chord theory books that spend most of the time teaching novices what a triad is or what an interval is. This is left hand voicings AND theory presented in a manner with not only descriptions but discussion of application. It is like having a thoughtful instructor working with you. Connections between chords and applications are always discussed so that you get a far more useful in depth understanding of what to do with the chords learned. A CD is also included to help you hear what chords and progressions sound like. Play along sections are also included. Sweet. This book is really better than most others out there and you would do well consider this wonderful book. I have wasted a lot of bucks on less than good books and it is a big deal when I find a winner.

Great entry to jazz for late beginner / early intermediate

This book and CD make it easy to learn how to read a lead sheet, and it also helps a lot with rhythm and left/right-hand independence. It is not a comprehensive book, but it nicely fills a niche. The main limitation is, as advertised, that you only learn one left-hand voicing for each chord. The idea is that you can use the chord rhythmically in the LH and play the melody or improvise with the RH. Alternatively, if you are comping, you can easily learn the voicings with your RH and play the bass with your LH.

I think the book would be too overwhelming for a total beginner, because it assumes you can read treble and bass clef (you only need to know bass clef well enough to check that you've got the correct chord voicing). You'll also want a portable CD player or computer with the ability to adjust left/right balance, so you can play along with the drums & bass, which are recorded in the left channel (the piano is recorded in the right channel). Players who already have good independence between their hands can undoubtedly go through the book much faster than I can, but will still benefit from learning all of the nice jazz chords in order of increasing difficulty (see table of contents for a complete list). Each song and etude has a metronome marking so you can gradually work it up to speed before you try to play along.

The main limitation of the book is that you only learn one voicing for each chord, and you typically play the melody 8va to avoid having your hands crash into each other. But there are other books that cover alternative chord voicings (e.g., Mantooth). With this book, you'll get one set of voicings down pat so you don't have to pause and think about them. I think it is an excellent entry into jazz, and I look forward to working through the rest of the book.

Hardwork, but it's made a difference

I also took a half-day seminar from the author. There's no substitute for hard work and practice, practice, practice. But his book is good, it's made me faceup to things I've been avoiding for 30 years. I can see the difference right across my playing and I'm only about a third of the way through the book. This one will stick with you and build your skills.

The "Grandfather" of Coaching Books - and Still One of the Best!

This book, now in its FOURTH edition, is the grandfather of coaching books and approaches. Much of what has come to be known as professional business coaching came from Timothy Gallway and Whitmore's sports training techniques. As such, the book provides a simple foundation for coaching based on the context of awareness and responsibility through asking questions and listening. He presents the G R O W model of coaching - Goal, Reality, Option, Will - as a format for coaching sessions.

The book begins with a few foundational beliefs of coaches. Unlike old models of management that work from the "carrot and stick" approach, a coach believes in the potential of the client. Whitmore believes that people are only able to change only that which they are aware. Responsibility must stay with the client if they are to perform. Questions raise awareness and yet maintain the client's responsibility. If the coach tells the coachee something, awareness may increase slightly, but responsibility in now in the hands of the coach, the source of the information. Questions cause the client to pay attention to their actions, think at higher levels, and provide feedback for the coach to work from.

The G R O W model provides a sequence of questioning and for the coaching session. A coach starts with the client's goal. Either an end goal, like "retire at age 45," or a performance goal, such as "write a new training manual by December." After further clarifying the goal the coach can move on to the current reality of the situation. Asking such questions as: What have you done on the manual up to now? What are the needs that you think a manual might help? What has kept you from finishing the manual these past two years? Options are then generated from the client as to how they can achieve their goal. Finally, What will you do? Whitmore builds several checks and balances into this last step to ensure performance.

The final sections of the book are new territory in this 4th edition. Coaching used to be about performance - doing, achievement. In the past few years coaching has moved to underlying motivations of personal fulfillment: the "why" underneath the desire to achieve performance goals. Whitmore includes new chapters on coaching for purpose, getting to life's meaning.

Of the dozen books on coaching that I own, this one has consistently been the book I refer back to as I try to explain to someone what is coaching: Believe in the potential of people; raise awareness and maintain responsibility through questions and listening; and follow the GROW model. All are the essence of good coaching.

However, for me, this new fourth edition, which is subtitled "The principles and practice of coaching and leadership", over-promises and fails to deliver on the "leadership" bit. In my view, there are much better books on the principles and practice of leadership.

John Whitmore has added three new chapters on the subject of leadership. The first is largely a re-presentation of an old chapter ("Coaching the Corporation") under a new chapter heading ("The Challenge to Leaders") so it is essentially old wine in a new bottle. The second stresses the need for leaders to get beyond their old conditioning and free themselves from fear (which I am all for) but it does not say much about its practice other than, "It can be achieved by coaching." The third lists the author's views on the ideal leader's qualities: (1) values-driven (2) vision (3) authenticity (4) agility - that is, flexibility, ability to get beyond old conditioning, and creativity (5) inner psychological alignment (6) selfless purpose. And that's largely it.

Admittedly, he does suggest that the way for leaders to develop these qualities is through transpersonal coaching and he offers a new "Tools of Transpersonal Coaching" chapter. However, some of its content is a re-presentation of what was in the old "Coaching for Meaning" chapter. The rest is interesting in that it introduces (with little detail) the idea of sub-personalities and a transpersonal model of the psyche. However, I just do not think this all adds up to the "principles and practice of leadership". The principles and practice of modern coaching, yes, but not leadership per se.

In summary, if you are looking for a good book on coaching, this is one. But if you are looking for something to guide you in developing others as leaders (or developing yourself as a leader), for me, this isn't it. What would I recommend instead? If you want something that does address the principles and practice of leadership and gets into the leader's underlying psychology in more depth than Whitmore does, try James Scouller's "The Three Levels of Leadership". If you want just the principles and practice of leadership without the psychology, you cannot go far wrong with John Adair's classic, "Effective Leadership" although he puts less emphasis on values, vision, authenticity and servant leadership than Whitmore and Scouller.

The Making of a Legend By a Shameless Showman

David Lean included a journalist, Jackson Bentley, in his epic film "Lawrence of Arabia," an obvious take-off on the great journalist and author Lowell Thomas. In fact, Thomas was with Lawrence in Arabia and used the experience to make a name for himself and to create a legend. Sadly, it is also true, that T.E. Lawrence did not want to be a legend. As a biography of Lawrence or an introduction to the Middle East this volume has suffered a bit over the years..."it's all right," but there are better books on each subject. Still, this is something special, at least for this writer. This was the first book on the Middle East that I read and when combined with Lean's film which I saw about the same time in early 1963 I was hooked. I have studied, taught about and written about the Middle East ever since. Lowell Thomas and David Lean were inspirations for this modest scholar. I had the privilege to spend part of an early evening with Lowell Thomas in 1973, in of all places a press box awaiting a football game at the University of Utah. It was an unexpected and rare treat. Thomas seemed quite moved that he had encouraged the work of a graduate student. He was was quite a man. His greatest talent was to tell stories, and that he did, with some dramatic embellishments. This work on Lawrence is not unfactual, indeed it provides a good deal of fact. It is also quite sympathetic to Islam and the Arabs, as it should be. Lawrence seems larger than life. But in truth there are men like that. Both Lawrence and Thomas were such men and that can be seen in this wonderful book. It reads well, and it educates, even if some of it is the stuff of legend.

Amazing prediction of the morass in Iraq

Lawrence has been severely criticized for his obvious character faults and bizarre behavior both during and after the war. The critics have used these assessments to minimize the value of his activities, which in my opinion only tends to obscure what Lawrence personally experienced and what Lowell Thomas described - namely that the people of the desert were first of all faithful to the clan, next to the tribe, and then only incidently to any larger arab grouping. Despite a common enemy, there was little common purpose. Lawrence's greatest challenges were securing cooperation between the various tribal groups. Much of this thinking still pervades the Middle East. The Iraq situation is just a modern version of Arabia during WW1. Of equal interest and importance are the descriptions of Lawrence's activities in the Middle East prior to the war. He successfully conducted archaeologic explorations (digs) using local resident labor. And he demonstated how he involved them emotionally in achieving group success in that effot. Timeless and priceless example. A book for the ages. Should be required reading in Washington DC.

Useful workbook for advanced students of calculus and linear algebra

This book is unique in its niche, as far as I know: While there are plenty of problem books for students taking first-year calculus, this book should provide a challenge to students at a graduate level. To give you a clearer idea of its contents, here is the chapter listing:

1. Basic Operations
2. Linear Equations
3. Determinants and Traces
4. Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors
5. Commutators and Anticommutators
6. Decomposition of Matrices
7. Functions of Matrices
8. Linear Differential Equations
9. Kronecker Product
10. Norms and Scalar Product
11. Groups and Matrices
12. Lie Algebra and Matrices
13. Graphs and Matrices

I would give this rich collection of problem 5-stars, but for my money I would have appreciated more detailed solutions. Also, the problems often use (standard) terms that the book has not defined, which can make it difficult to understand the problem being defined. A separate reference on each of the topics should be considered prerequisite.

Its a Must Have

This is a must-have...but it would be nice to see COLOR pictures, maybe even slightly larger pictures in general. The detail could definitely be more helpful. I understand it just suppose to give you an idea of the process, but lots of mechanic newbies depend on these manuals and it would be nice to offer a clearer view of whats being shown. Its a must-have so we can't complain too much. But it would be a great idea to offer a 'Premium' manual. One that Does offer larger pictures, maybe More pictures, and added input/tips/detail on the most in-depth topics. Still its a must have!

It's Just OK

Haynes manuals are entertaining; the grainy black-and-white photos, the grubby hands... This is full of semi-useless information for things I'll never do, totally ignores convertibles, and uses repair procedures way more complicated than necessary. Supplement this with you-tube, and it's OK, but not great. I mostly got it as a security blanket, I'm in the habit of buying manuals for every vehicle I have. This one, though, sets a new low bar for Haynes. if nothing else, the cheap paper is probably pretty absorbent.

It is a good starting point

This manual goes over the basic and a little bit more. It doesn't have pictures for everything but it is a good starting point. This plus youtube and your set.
