Better books out there on this subject

I've read 4 books on the subject of positive psychology and this here was my least favorite. It isn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll outline my final judgment with a list of pros and cons.

Pros:

1. The author's research and contribution to the field of positive psychology is both interesting and useful. The awareness that positive emotions "broaden and build" is insightful and intuitively makes sense.

2. Decent introduction and overview of positive emotions and psychology.

3. Some useful exercises.

Cons:

1. Much of the book is written in a way that, like many self help books, is just bloated. The author, like many others, spends pages and pages telling you what the book is going to do for you when it could be telling what it should be telling you so that it could do something for you. In short, I don't want a book to spend pages and pages pumping me up by telling me what it's going to do for me over and over. It's like a bad infomercial and a complete waste of pages.

2. There are better books out there on this subject, one of which is titled "The How of Happiness" and which I found to just be better in every respect.

My suggestion is to read the research from the author of "Positivity...", as it seems to be an important and consistently reproduced contribution to the field, and get "The How of Happiness".

About the Author

KATHLEEN TAYLOR is professor in the Doctorate of Educational Leadership program in the Kalmanovitz School of Education at Saint Mary's College of California. A former Fulbright Scholar, she teaches, writes, and consults internationally in the areas of adult development and learning, learning and transformation, creativity, and "brain-aware" facilitation of adult learning.

CATHERINE MARIENAU is professor-faculty mentor and coordinator of the Master of Arts in Educating Adults program in the School for New Learning at DePaul University. She teaches, writes, and consults in the areas of adult learning and development, competency-based learning, assessing learning, reflective practice, and "brain-aware" facilitation of adult learning.

i HAD TO WAIT 40 YEARS TO READ THIS BOOK

Back in the 1970s I was director of experiential learning at the institute of research at the University of Alabama " I thought that the old Chinese proverb said it so well..". I hear and I forget..I see and Remember..I do and Understand. " I had listed 32 observation that tend to support experiential learning. And Garry Shirts another pioneer in the development of experiential learning listed 12 hunches about Simulations games as educational tools. But science calls this anecdotal evidence. (doesn't prove anything)
Except the fact that results showed over and over that it WORKED.

Now 40 years later this well written, informative book presents conclusive evidence that confirms what us early pioneers believed. Experience is the best teacher

I have been anticipating the release of this book. From page 1 and on, I am not disappointed.
The book is packed with information and contains valuable insight from practitioners. As a professor I am drawn to the chapter endings that give a "Pause for Reflection" that allows me to make connections to my own practice. Throughout the book I was impressed to see "Key Ideas' and "Further Reading" sections that are wonderful lists of information.
I know I will use this book as a resource and I anticipate bringing it into graduate level courses in adult education that I teach.

Everything you never knew or thought about water

I came to The Big Thirst as someone who was already pretty water conscious (some think obsessed), and a definite water conservationist. But, wow, all that I had never thought about water Charles Fishman has contained in this book in a thought provoking, entertaining and instructive way. This is in no diatribe designed to make us feel guilty about our water ignorance (although Fishman does rant on Arlen Specter at one point near the end, and rightfully so), but rather a series of stories crafted to heighten our awareness, in an attempt as the author says "to change our relationship to water".

From Australia to India, down the strip of Las Vegas, around the Gulf Coast of Texas to Vermont and elsewhere Fishman takes the reader on a tour of man's challenges and successes in managing our water usage, distribution systems as well as the effect on mankind, the economy and lastly gets the reader thinking about where the next million or billion gallons is coming from.

This book is a treat for anyone who has stopped for even one minute to wonder where our water really flows from and if someday it might not.

Everything You Need to Know About Water and Why It's So Important

Water, as everyone knows, is the basis of life as we know it. We simply cannot survive without it. That makes water a very valuable resource and one that people have argued and fought over for too many years to recall.

In this book, the author takes us on a journey about the history of water, why it is where it is, why cities have sprung up where they have, how water has been turned into a multibillion dollar business and what is happening in the water world currently. It is almost all encompassing on the subject of water and is fascinating in the process.

One of the first points made by the author is that the water we drink today is the same water that has been on the planet for ions. That water was formed during a period in the earth's creation and the amount has not changed since then. As a result, the water we drink today was, at one time, the toilet water of ancient civilizations and was where dinosaurs drank, bathed and went to the bathroom. While this may be a disturbing thought, it has been that way for ions and provides us with a method for reusing today's water to become tomorrow's water.

Along the journey, the author points out that due to climate change, water that was easily obtainable in the past maybe be moving to newer locations. Cities that were thought to have safe supplies are in the process of going dry. Las Vegas, as one example, is reusing and capturing every possible drop of water since the supply at Lake Mead is dwindling by the day. Another example used by the author is the drought that has overtaken the City of Atlanta and how precarious the supply to that city is. He also discusses why this doesn't have to be.

This is only a small part of the discussion of water the author brings to the table. He goes around the world to explore water issues in other countries and why they have occurred and what can be done to fix the problems.

I highly recommend this book to all. As the water we take for granted becomes harder to supply, we will need to develop new strategies for handling water supply to citizens and corporations. This book is the beginning step in a new way to think about

A useful and informative addition to my library on southeastern archaeology. I have absolutely no doubt that Dr. Brown's book will prove to be a standard reference on the archaeology of this portion of Louisiana for decades to come.

Unstoppable Force meets Immovable Object: Mason Blackthorne and Daniel Cross

This book was a pleasure to read.

SETTING:
In a sentence Blackthorne is a Gay New Adult romance starting at a Hogwarts full of real (and power hungry) people.

ROMANCE AND SEX:
The romance between Daniel Cross and Mason Blackthorne burns very hot, physically and emotionally. The addition of Daniel and Mason's beasts' attraction is fuel to the fire. There are steamy scenes while Daniel struggles to keep from bonding with Mason so you don't have to wait for the emotional happy ending for physicality to enter into the story.

There is more to Mason's pursuit of Daniel than appears at first. It isn't so much a chase that starts when Mason's conduit dragon emerges as a story of denied attraction and affection between the both of them. The consummation of the emotional relationship is just as enjoyable and hard fought as the physical consummation.

Intrinsic to the romance is Mason's prickly nature and Daniel's fight to control his own nature. Mason is aggressive, angry, and quick to lash out. Daniel is still, quiet, dangerous, trying to keep a firm hand on his own temper and power.

CHARACTER GROWTH:
The majority of the story is about Daniel's personal growth. Daniel must face the forces that destroyed his family and accept his magical self. He also must grow to embrace his bond with Mason.

Mason's transformation is more subtle. As the story unfurls the reader's perception of Mason changes and we appreciate the growth he has accomplished to become a hero instead of a villain. He takes the final steps into independence and happiness in the story. Both Daniel and Mason grow separately and in relation to each other.

EDITING
The work was well written and well edited. No editing or spelling error took me out of the flow of the story.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
I enjoyed the premise, the writing, the love story, and the sex scenes. Daniel and Mason were a joy to watch dance around one another. The world was gritty and realistic without being depressing. The secondary characters were three dimensional. The plot line stood up to scrutiny. I am looking forward to the second book which will star one of the supporting characters (Ethan) who was pivotal to the happy resolution of this book.

Writing is good. Ms Sins has been getting better since I have started reading her works.

Writing is so good that one is willing to forgive both the very heavy Potter-series-inspiration (the MC has lost his whole family to evil magicians; the academy where he studies is to be reached with a train... yes, A T.R.A.I.N., etc. etc.) and the hyperbolic imagery when it comes to the too long and too frequent sex scenes.

There are limits, though, as to what one is willing to put up with.
I am trying to avoid spoilers here, but there is a scene where people get attacked and many, many of them get seriously hurt. The MC defends his love interest, at first, and that is perfectly fine. As soon as he makes sure said love interest is safe, what does the MC do? He has sex with him. He does not help all the people lying injured and suffering nearby. He has sex. And the author regales us with another lengthy sex scene to prove to us how raw is the passion the MC feels for his lover.

No.
I threw -figuratively- my Kindle against the wall and stopped reading. Good writing is useless if an author does not know what to do with it and, if this work has so many plot issues so early in the storyline, what will have happened by the time we read the second instalment?

Well done young mages come into power and conflict

Magical young men come into power they they don't quite know how to handle. Cross and Blackthrone have an antagonist love hate relationship at the magic Academy. They come into their powers after graduation and Blackthrone is now seen as an endless power source for whoever can bond with him. His parents put out a notice of what he is in the paper and that he is available. They are deliciously evil and power hungry themselves.

Cross is very conflicted about magic and abuse of power. His family was killed and their power stolen. He tries to turn his back on his power and his attraction to Blackthorne. But then he finds out that his family's killer is courting / trageting Blackthorne.

The world building was great in this story and the writing above average. The characters are complex. They aren't always nice but the reasons for that become apparent. They are as likely to knife each other as kiss but underneath they have integrity. They stumble over figuring out what is the right thing to do and often don't agree.

I will continue reading this author. A nice find.

Entertaining romp

The heroine of this story, Finny Aletter, has the right combination of characteristics to make this story a fun and fast read. She's working in a male-dominated company, yet has nearly reached the rank of partner. But she has one flaw - the affair she had with her boss - that comes full circle to haunt her when he is murdered. She somewhat inadvertently becomes involved in solving the case and has a series of entertaining experiences along the way.

In the end, who committed the crime is an unexpected surprise, which is the hallmark of a good mystery. I highly recommend this book.

Good Cozy Mystery

Just when burned-out stockbroker Finny decides to call it quits and switch to a new career, her boss and secret ex-lover turns up murdered. When she becomes one of the prime suspects, circumstances - including her love-hate relationship with the investigating officer Barelli - propel Finny into amateur detective mode. Even when her life is endangered, she reveals how tough she can be, determined to find out who killed her boss while searching for the precious object someone is killing to possess.

Montgomery does a good job of salting the story with numerous suspects, all equally capable and motivated to commit murder, with twists, turns, and assorted interesting and sordid characters. After meeting Finny's coworkers, it's easy to see why she needs a change.

Like the Sue Grafton books, the story takes place before the advent of cell phones. I kept waiting for Finny to pull out a phone and call for help whenever she got into trouble, but the Denver locale and gutsy Finny more than made up for it. A good read. Will definitely get the next one in the series.

Exciting as well as witty

Finny Aletter is a successful broker with a prosperous Denver brokerage. Successful, but as burnt out as her long-over affair with her boss. She yearns to quit and put her considerable carpenter skills to use renovating homes. Her plans go awry when she inadvertently bursts into the police investigation of the murder of her boss. In a confrontation with Detective Barelli she quickly becomes suspect #1. In self-defense she turns to detecting and instigates a scavenger hunt for a lost manuscript. The hunt includes scavengers, no less, and turns Finney into a race with death.
Montgomery is a master with descriptions and wonderfully brings to life the Denver neighborhood's lively mix of young and old, as well as any city's inevitable bag ladies and bums.
Scavenger Hunt was a fun, entertaining read, and I've just downloaded the second in the series, Obstacle Course.
