Grade 9 Up—Samantha Kingston has worked her way up the popularity ladder; now a senior, she and her three best friends rule their school. On Cupid Day, Sam expects to receive Valentine roses, to party with her friends, and to finally (maybe) have sex with her equally popular boyfriend. The last thing she expects is that she will die, but in the final moments of her life, as she hears "a horrible, screeching sound—metal on metal, glass shattering, a car folding in two," everything turns to nothing. Only, it is not the end for Sam. She wakes up to start the same day over again, and again; in fact, she relives it seven times. At first, being dead has its advantages, as she realizes that nothing worse can happen to her. She first conducts herself with reckless abandon, seducing her math teacher and smoking marijuana. It is difficult to feel pity for Sam; she is snobbish, obnoxious, a cheater, and just plain mean. However, her gradual and complete transformation is so convincing that when she finally puts others before herself in order to save another life, it is moving and cathartic. The deepening relationship between Sam and Kent, her childhood friend, is sensitively described and the most complex and compelling relationship in the story. Although somewhat predictable, the plot drives forward and teens will want to see where Sam's choices lead. Haunting, heartbreaking, beautiful

Friday, February 12th should be just another average day for popular, beautiful Samantha Kingston. But it's far from it--her ride home after a late-night party ends in a car accident, only when Sam wakes up, it's Friday, February 12th again. Forced to re-live the last day of her life seven times, Sam struggles to understand the meaning behind these experiences and the significance in her own life and actions. Because only when she can get her last day exactly right will she ever be able to take the next step.

With keen insights and startling candidness, Lauren Oliver's debut novel is a frank, if not at times brutal look at high school social circles and the careless cruelties and bullying that occurs on a daily basis. Sam is one of the mean girls, and she shrugs off her biting words and actions as something that just happens, collateral damage of living through high school. But through every complex and carefully plotted event, Oliver peels back the layers of Sam's life and teaches us all that every little deed has a consequence, and no act goes unnoticed. Though Sam is by no means a likable character at the beginning of the novel, as her character is revealed and she learns a thing or two about the things she has done in her life and the person she has become, she morphs into a true, selfless, and caring heroine, despite her many flaws. The story line is addicting and suspenseful. and as each "day" passes and Sam begins to get things right, the question that has been looming in the back of your mind since the end of the first chapter--What will happen to Sam?--becomes more and more urgent. Oliver is skillful at wielding suspense and heartbreak, making you think hard about the value of your own life and actions.

Before I Fall is a haunting and beautiful book. It will float around at the back of your mind long after you've read it.

If you knew THEN what you know NOW- what would you do?

Sam is the kind of girl we can all hate. Popular, snotty, superior. In life, you could have pointed out her bad behavoir and she probably would have laughed in your face, or honestly, not cared at all. But, in death she is forced to take a good, long look at every choice she has made in her relatively short lifetime.

We get to know Sam and her friends at the beginning of the story, leading up to a crash that takes Sam's life. You have to be patient as you are introduced to them because they are not likeable at all. Just when you think you've had enough of them, they are in a deadly crash. That's not the end of the story, though, only the beginning.

Sam goes into a sort of sleep following the accident and awakens to relive her last day. Will changing something along the way lead to a different result? She tries, and tries again, and again. In fact she gets numerous attempts to "perfect" her last day, hoping she can make the most of her life...and her death if can't undo the accident.

This is not your typical tale of redeeming yourself. It's not so easy to make the changes that Sam needs to make to change fate. She doesn't simply do something new each time she gets a new day. Her first attempts are vastly different with vastly different results. It's not until she puts all the finest pieces together that she thinks she has the best solution. Life is unpredictable and so is death for Sam.

Watching this aggravating girl realize how wrong she has been is satisfying. Seeing her struggle to become a better person with only one day is fascinating. Wondering how (and if) she is going to succeed makes you not want to put this book down. Great read!

Note to parents: This book does contain a lot of references to drinking, drugs and sex, but nothing graphic.

Citing Plato, Buddha and modern brain science, psychologist Haidt notes the mind is like an "elephant" of automatic desires and impulses atop which conscious intention is an ineffectual "rider." Haidt sifts Eastern and Western religious and philosophical traditions for other nuggets of wisdom to substantiate—and sometimes critique—with the findings of neurology and cognitive psychology. The Buddhist-Stoic injunction to cast off worldly attachments in pursuit of happiness, for example, is backed up by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's studies into pleasure. And Nietzsche's contention that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger is considered against research into post-traumatic growth. An exponent of the "positive psychology" movement, Haidt also offers practical advice on finding happiness and meaning. Riches don't matter much, he observes, but close relationships, quiet surroundings and short commutes help a lot, while meditation, cognitive psychotherapy and Prozac are equally valid remedies for constitutional unhappiness. Fascinating Read for People Interested in Psychology and What Makes a Happy Person

I very much enjoyed this book and have recommended it to friends. Upon 2nd reading, I highlighted many of the passages and refer to them often. When I originally saw the title, I thought it might be a new age, somewhat simplistic, "how to be happy" book. But it's not. Haidt, a social psychologist who has done his homework. This is a serious book based in psychological experiments throughout the 20th (and 21st) century, and how the results of those studies compare to ancient philosophies of what makes a happy person. The main metaphor of the book is that our brains have a "rider" and an "elephant;" with the rider being our conscious rational mind, and the elephant being our instincts and base emotions. The first 1/3 of the book focuses on neurology and brain chemistry. Personally, I like that stuff. But if that's not your bag, hang tight, because the next two-thirds of the book delves into how our biology, our outlook, and our actions can affect our happiness "set point"; and how we can work to adjust that happiness range. The author is able to take complicated topics and turn them into interesting stories about the way we behave and what is the psychologically-based path to happiness.

I truly loved the book.

There are several different “happiness hypotheses.” One is that happiness comes from getting what you want, but we all know (and research confirms) that such happiness is short-lived. A more promising hypothesis is that happiness comes from within and cannot be obtained by making the world conform to your desires. This idea was widespread in the ancient world: Buddha in India and the Stoic philosophers in ancient Greece and Rome all counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and events, which are always unpredictable and uncontrollable, and to cultivate instead an attitude of acceptance. This ancient idea deserves respect, and it is certainly true that changing your mind is usually a more effective response to frustration than is changing the world. However, I will present evidence that this second version of the happiness hypothesis is wrong. Recent research shows that there are some things worth striving for; there are some external conditions of life that can make you lastingly happier. One of these conditions is relatedness—the bonds we form, and need to form, with others. I’ll present research showing where love comes from, why passionate love always cools, and what kind of love is “true” love. I’ll suggest that the happiness hypothesis offered by Buddha and the Stoics should be amended: Happiness comes from within, and happiness comes from without. We need the guidance of both ancient wisdom and modern science to get the balance right.”

Jonathan Haidt is a leading positive psychology researcher/professor at the University of Virginia and this book is an incredible look at ten “Great Ideas” from ancient wisdom that he brilliantly analyzes in the light of modern science while helping us apply the super practical stuff to our 21st century lives. It’s a great blend of intellectual rigor, philosophical wisdom and nuts and-bolts practicality that I highly recommend.

If this Note resonates with you, I *definitely* think you’ll love the book. I put it up there with Sonja Lyubomirsky’s How of Happiness and Tal Ben-Shahar’s Pursuit of Perfect and Happier as some must-read positive psychology goodness.

Eye opening and very easy to read

This book is a gem. It goes into how human brain works and how we trick ourselves into creating some false perception of things. Book opens your mind in terms of how much we ignore of our own nature and yet we seem to be under the impression we know it all, including ourselves.Interesting to see how much we ignore and even lie to ourselves, we manipulate things for them to fit in our preconceived notion of how things are and how we are. I usually mark with a pencil those book pages where I find some interesting or revealing idea tat I can apply into my life. With this book I think I marked pretty much every single page. There is so much insight and wisdom in every single page, not even chapter. This book has really opened my eyes and needed to come back to it several times in order to absorb main points and ideas. Haidt provides a lot of insight on how our brain tricks us and also in how we can actively work to improve our happiness level. It also leaves you with some interesting aha" moments around things that you intuitively know, but still you rationalize in a different way and convince yourself they are something else. I would definitely recommend this book to any person who is looking at improving their quality of live.

Gorgeous, Quality Book From the Grimm Series - Buy it Now at This Low Price!

First, buy this book if you are a fan of the series -- it is a keeper. You will be sorry later if they go out of print or go up in price.

Although the book is beautiful, glossy, with gorgeous drawings, etc. from the series, I was disappointed in the lack listings of some of the Wesen characters in the series. They are crossed off = X'd out in the Wesen Index. Especially since the Bauerschwein were featured in 11/8/13 episode as major characters in a feud with the Blutbaden (Monroe's Wesen character). Even Rosalie's Fuchsbau Wesen character is X'd out in the Wesen Index ("table of contents"). A total of 107 titles are listed including Wesen and, of those, twenty-seven are X'd out and not in the book. I wrote to Titan Books (to their readerfeedback email address given in the back of the book) and let them know. My question was: are only the Wesen listed that the Grimm have killed or who are dangerous? The Baueschwein were definitely dangerous in the recent episode.

To fans of the series (of which I am one):
In any case, don't delay purchase of this book - especially at this current price - you will love it.

A must-have for fans of "Grimm"

As any true Grimmster knows, Nick Burkhardt would have been lost without access to Aunt Marie's trailer and book of lore when he first discovered he was a Grimm. Now fans of the show can own their own copy of the book and learn even more about the Wesen Nick deals with everyday.

Written in mostly German, there are entries recorded in Spanish and Japanese; each entry has been translated into English for the general reader. Full color images of several of the Wesen are included alongside the pen and ink drawings of those Grimm who first observed the ferocious beasts dating as far back as the 1600s.

This book is a Christmas present for my daughter who is a huge Grimm fan. She will love it! The book is gorgeous and beautifully detailed. One caveat- the pictures really are like those on the show so young children may be disturbed if they flip through this.

About the Author

Emil E. Malizia is professor, chair, and director of the dual degree program, department of city and regional planning at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has extensive research experience in the areas of urban, rural, and regional development and redevelopment. His writings have appeared in the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education, Journal of the American Planning Association, and American Journal of Health Promotion.

Edward J. Feser is professor of urban and regional planning as well as agricultural and consumer economics in the department of urban and regional planning at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the World Bank, the US Economic Development Administration, and multiple state and local agencies. His writings have appeared in Regional Studies, International Regional Science Review, and Economic Development Quarterly.

About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956, and has also spent two years as a visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Hugh's career has centered entirely around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky's "College Physics," he is currently a coauthor with Roger Freedman on Sears and Zemanksy's "University Physics,"

Hugh is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.

Robert M. Geller teaches physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also obtained his Ph.D. under Robert Antonucci in observational cosmology. Currently, he is involved in two major research projects: a search for cosmological halos predicted by the Big Bang, and a search for the flares that are predicted to occur when a supermassive black hole consumes a star.

Rob also has a strong focus on undergraduate education. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He trains the graduate student teaching assistants onmethods of physics education. He is also a frequent faculty leader for the UCSB Physics Circus, in which student volunteers perform exciting and thought-provoking physics demonstrations to elementary schools.

Rob loves the outdoors. He and his wife Susanne enjoy backpacking along rivers and fly fishing, usually with rods she has build and flies she has tied. Their daughter Zoe loves fishing too, but her fish tend to be plastic, and float in the bathtub.

Michael R. Freedman, PhD, teaches psychology at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he also maintains a private practice. Formerly, Dr. Freedman was Chief of Adult Clinical Psychology at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, where he specialized in treating patients with asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
Samuel J. Rosenberg, PhD, is formerly Director of Adult Psychology Training at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is now Vice President of Ross & Roberts, Inc., in Stratford, Connecticut.
Cynthia L. Divino, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in Boulder, Colorado. Specializing in working with children and adolescents, she served as a pediatric psychologist at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
