The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly: A Physician's First Year, by Matt McCarthy

A scorchingly frank look at how doctors are made, bringing readers into the critical care unit to see one burgeoning physician's journey from ineptitude to competence.

In medical school, Matt McCarthy dreamed of being a different kind of doctor—the sort of mythical, unflappable physician who could reach unreachable patients. But when a new admission to the critical care unit almost died his first night on call, he found himself scrambling. Visions of mastery quickly gave way to hopes of simply surviving hospital life, where confidence was hard to come by and no amount of med school training could dispel the terror of facing actual patients.

This funny, candid memoir of McCarthy’s intern year at a New York hospital provides a scorchingly frank look at how doctors are made, taking readers into patients’ rooms and doctors’ conferences to witness a physician's journey from ineptitude to competence. McCarthy's one stroke of luck paired him with a brilliant second-year adviser he called “Baio” (owing to his resemblance to the Charles in Charge star), who proved to be a remarkable teacher with a wicked sense of humor. McCarthy would learn even more from the people he cared for, including a man named Benny, who was living in the hospital for months at a time awaiting a heart transplant. But no teacher could help McCarthy when an accident put his own health at risk, and showed him all too painfully the thin line between doctor and patient.

The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly offers a window on to hospital life that dispenses with sanctimony and self-seriousness while emphasizing the black-comic paradox of becoming a doctor: How do you learn to save lives in a job where there is no practice?

Review

“A real delight...an entertaining window into an unknown world.”—USA Today

“It's an account so engaging that I went from swearing never to let an intern near me to understanding exactly why the doctor-training process works the way it does.”—Entertainment Weekly

“McCarthy gives readers a brutally honest, often darkly comical glimpse into the formative days of his medical career...an enthralling account of the metamorphosis of an uncertain medical resident into a skilled physician.”—Discover

“[This] rousing memoir describes [a] tumultuous year of medical internship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, a 12-month marathon noteworthy for a steep learning curve, emotional extremes, and chronic sleep deprivation...A genuine glimpse at the making of a doctor.” —Booklist

“This story is a year in the life of an almost-doctor, but it is so much more than that. It’s a book about mentorship, compassion, pride, and the insecurity of learning the most important lessons in your career—and in your life—long after those lessons were supposed to be taught. It’s about the precarious and often unclear boundary between life and death, and those tasked with maintaining this boundary, even at the end of a thirty-hour shift.  Perhaps above all, it’s about decent people doing a very hard, decent thing with their lives. Yes, doctors are people too—and McCarthy tempers and then transcends the unease of such a reminder by telling his story with much humor, and even more heart.” —Jeff Hobbs, author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace

“Fascinating, funny and spot on. Like my own internship – only with a laugh track. A must read for anyone who’s going to be a doctor, or just going to see one.” —Lisa Sanders, MD, New York Times Magazine’s “Diagnosis” columnist and author of Every Patient Tells A Story

“McCarthy’s tale is by turns harrowing, hilarious, and uplifting. Whether you’re deciding if you should become a doctor, or merely if you should go see one, this look beneath the hospital gown will change your perspective for good.” —David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene

“Thanks to Dr. Matt’s column, I know why tennis players grunt, and why five-finger shoes are for morons, and why I should have gotten a vasectomy during March Madness.  And thanks to this book, I now know how he became the kind of doctor that I feel comfortable going to with stupid drunken questions.” —Drew Magary, author of The Postmortal and Someone Could Get Hurt

“Hilarious, horrifying and ultimately inspiring, The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly is a hallucinogenic trip through a doctor’s first year, filled with ill-fated pin pricks, misdiagnosis, disappearing patients, life and, inevitably, death. Beautifully written and impossible to put down, here is the unvarnished look at how we create the flawed and ultimately heroic human beings who save our lives—and sometimes don’t.” —Steve Fainaru, co-author of League of Denial

“Everything you did—or maybe didn’t—want to know about becoming a doctor. Matt McCarthy’s tale of internship is equal parts entertaining, cringeworthy, and inspiring.” —Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, author of What Doctors Feel

“Matt McCarthy's new book, The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly, is an honest, beautiful, and terrifying look at what goes into creating a doctor. Filled with very human characters, both doctors and patients alike, Matt's well paced writing makes it easy to imagine yourself in the shoes of a brand new intern, nervous and afraid, yet still tasked with literal life and death decisions. I would recommend this book to anyone who knows or has been treated by a doctor (so basically everyone).”—Chris Kluwe, author of Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies

“Well-written and brutally honest, Dr. McCarthy’s engrossing memoir of his internship year is told with uncommon frankness and perception. The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly is one of the most powerful books about a doctor-in-training I have ever read. The author vividly describes the crushing emotional and physical demands a young doctor must face, and he does so with consummate skill and compassion. A marvelous book.” —Michael Collins, author of Blue Collar, Blue Scrubs

“I’m no doctor—but I am writer—and what I appreciated most about Matt McCarthy’s book is the humor and the humanity on every page. Even if you don't know the spleen from the stomach, by the end you will understand the sometimes frightening and sometimes comic reality of a doctor's apprenticeship.”  —Jack McCallum, author of Dream Team

“Insightful, fast-paced and achingly honest, Matt McCarthy’s The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly has all the elements of a great story: a flawed hero with lively allies battling frequent, seemingly insurmountable obstacles to reach a laudable goal - becoming a good doctor.” —Louise Aronson, author of A History of the Present Illness

Becoming a 'Real Doctor'
By Barkis
This memoir was an enjoyable read: the story of one man's journey from medical school to becoming a 'Real Doctor' and all of the pitfalls along the way. It focuses on his time as an intern and resident -- in this case, apparently both humbling him and honing his skills as a physician. There is a reason that medicine is called a 'practice' and this look at Matt's early days in hospital rotation brings a human face to the struggle. It's a damn wonder more mistakes aren't made when interns and residents are forced to work 30-hour shifts -- perhaps you'll feel the same way after reading this story!

So good, I wished it were longer!
By P. K Sykes
There are some books that I can hardly wait to finish because they are boring, repetitious, I disagree with the author, and a variety of other reasons. Then there are some books, that I wish would go on-and-on. This is one of those books. My son is a doctor, and I well remember his first year as an intern, but I had no idea of just how exhausting and frustrating it could be. I was fascinated by mistakes that were made, encouraged by the healing that happened, and touched by the author's compassion for his patients, and his desire to be a good doctor. This is all told with a light touch of humor. I highly recommend this book!

Good insight into what it's like to become a doctorate
By Rhonda Sato
Matt McCarthy has a very nice style of writing that puts one into the situation, helping to understand what's going on in his mind. He bares himself as he exposes both his victories and his losses. A very good read

About the Author
Joe Kubert was a prominent cartoonist, graphic novelist and illustrator. He was the founder and president of the Kubert School for cartoon and graphic arts in New Jersey. His extraordinary career spans the history of the comic book in America: he began drawing comics in 1938, just as Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1, and continued to be one of the most vital cartoonists in the history of the industry, writing and drawing both mainstream comic book characters as well as, more recently, graphic novels of his own conception. Kubert began his career at the early age of 12; his long list of well-loved cartoon figures includes Abraham Stone, Tarzan, Flash, Batman, Superman and the X-Men.

An obscure Joe Kubert Graphic Novel gets a clasy new edition
By Stephen Vincent Kempton
Dark Horse has taken this rare European graphic novel and given it a very fitting classy new edition it so rightly deserves. The one thing this volume could use is some background information so I will attempt to provide that in the course of this review.

Joe Kubert's contributions to the field of comics art are legendary. First as artist himself with beautiful art starting in Golden Age of comics with illustrations for early DC superheroes like the Flash and Hawkman spanning to his award-winning graphic novels done in the last couple decades of his life. Second as the father of Adam and Andy Kubert his equally talented sons. And third as the creator of The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art where he has mentored hundreds of people working today in comics, animation and related fields.

This 230 page graphic novel was originally printed in Italian in 2001. There was an obscure English-language version printed in 2005 by a company called SAF comics. I also own that version, it is printed in black and white and is a softcover. This is printed on glossy high quality paper in full color in Hard Cover with a dust jacket. If you own or have seen the Kubert Tarzan Archives also done by Dark Horse this is done in the exact same format with equally good production values.

Tex Willer is the longest running Italian comic book. First created in 1948 and continuing today. Over 1,100 regular Tex Willer comics have been published plus large 230 page TexOne specials of which this is one of. Tex has worldwide appeal, in the Nordic countries his adventures rate almost as much admiration as those of the Donald Duck family of books.

Tex Willer has a long history and continuity with three regular traveling companions and a large cast of continuing characters and villains. For this story it was decided that Tex would ride alone hence the subtitle The Lonesome Rider.

As a favor to the Italian publishers of his Graphic Novels , Joe agreed to do this story for them provided he had unlimited time to complete it. According to an interview he says he worked on it on and off for seven years while teaching full time and taking other side work.

The story itself written by current Tex Willer writer Claudio Nizzi is a good one but a little bit of a cliche. On his way to visit a farm couple and their teen daughter who he has not seen in around fifteen years Tex discovers all three have been recently murdered by three whites and an Indian. They discover Tex in pursuit and dump him and his horse over a cliff. Recovering from the fall the story splinters in to four separate storylines as he pursues each killer alone.

The art by Joe Kubert is kinetic and powerful with lush swatches of black inking. Every brush stroke is purposely placed. The coloring I am guessing was done in house by Dark Horse and strangely not credited. The coloring is done in a traditional flat style with subdued tones which do not distract from the art. I would not like to see this done with current overrendered style with the dark palate which is in current vogue.

One minor disappointment is on pages 9 through pages 13 Joe Kubert originally drew the young lady bathing nude . Even though the front side naughty bits are totally covered the Italian publisher who is described as very Catholic forced Joe to make her bathing in a full length petty coat, which seems strange. Even stranger after she is murdered she is clearly depicted as nude. I have seen scans of a limited edition of the original art published in an earlier promotional version done for the Nordic countries. Also in that Graphic Novel it had depictions of Tex Willer's supporting cast who do not appear in story. Those would have made great extras.

But what we do get is excellent and a welcome addition to any lover of Joe Kubert's art and a classic Western story which is a fun read.

Beatiful and pleasure to read and own, one of the best Tex ever!
By ameruz
I've read 100s of original Sergio Bonelli Tex, this one being the first in English and in hard cover with beautiful colors, it ranks at the very top of all times. Joe Kubert's drawing is excellent, more dramatic and live than a typical Tex novel.
I can only wish there would be more published like this one. It should also be offered in soft cover and for less $$ as this one may attract only hard core Tex fans at this price.
