DOOM reads just like a live-action video game

DOOM is a recognizable brand to any 90s kid or true gamer from the PC age of first person video gaming. One of my most vivid memories as a kid is sitting in my underwear at the large IBM PC a kid, around the age of six, blasting away demons, boneys, and hell-princes until late into the night. DOOM changed video gaming and provided a fun, horror filled universe for fans to live in. Sadly, as a kid, I never read the DOOM novelizations. Now, more than twenty years later, I am enjoying this series. The first book in the series is so far its best.
Imagine your worst nightmare becoming a reality. Humanity’s conception of hell and horror are made real by alien invaders who have one prime objective: destroy humanity!
"Fly" Taggart and Arlene, "A.S.", must traverse Mars’ moons and destroy thousands (literally!) of factory produced demon-like creatures and, wait for it . . . zombies! Yes, I think this is definitely one of those long lost zombie tales that should make a come back. Although I am personally burned out on the zombie genre (sorry The Walking Dead fans, but it is true), I felt revived by the undeads in the DOOM series. Their lemon-stinking existence is a constant reminder that when the dead walk the earth (DOOM #2), so will demons.
DOOM reads just like a live-action video game. The authors do a fun job to explain why rockets and MediPacks appear randomly when levers are pulled. Great imagination plus care and love was put into these stores for fans of DOOM. Knee-Deep in the Dead is by far the best of the four part series.

If you are a doom love you have to get this

this is an amazing book its not that long and i just loved it
the picture shown is not the cover you will get
the one you will get is a demons face but i didn't really care ether way the book is
if you love doom (and i mean the game not the movie) you need to get it
the reason i say you shouldn't get it if you love the movie and not the game is because the movie and the game have nothing in common the movie is biased on the game to the extent that there is evil monsters and they are on mars THAT'S IT! the game is demons coming from hell and wanting to take back earth the movie is about an ancient spices creating an extra chromosome and some of them going crazy
its a 250 page book
a great read very intense-full
the book reads kind of as if you were playing the game

the only downfall is you get the first and second one and you read those but when you go to get the third one its like 50 bucks which is kind of horrible.

Could have been better

The writing was bad, the storytelling cutrate, but the story itself, if you can get past that, was good. They had a lot of good ideas, they just weren't practiced enough to implement them to their full potential. But I've always loved the DOOM story...

Lust for Life

This is the life of an artist; and no need to worry your pretty little heads about it, Steve Ignorant IS an artist. In fact, he's one of the greatest rock and roll singers for one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. If you want to talk punk rock, then I'll say CRASS is the ultimate and leave it at that...the rest is propaganda.OK? OK.

Yes there are great CRASS stories here, but for me the most interesting part is Steve's childhood and adolescence. I felt like I was there with him pacing around that empty apartment wondering what to do and where to go, and if anything different from that boredom was even possible. I felt it because I did the same thing and so did you. This is a story about being inspired and opening yourself up to great art. For Steve it was the Angry Young Men writers and crucial, life-changing encounters with good people and kindred spirits; hearing Toots and the Maytals and having that precious first glimpse at cool style and fashion. Love and listen to his beautiful enthusiasm.The kid knew a good thing when he saw it, heard it or felt it.

Steve tells about the great freedom and spontaneity of CRASS, but also about the pressure of sudden and unexpected fame with the inevitable comedown when it's over. He never stops though; Punch and Judy Professor, reader, listener, student, and always ready to hit the road with a new band: Conflict, Schwartzeneggar, The Stratford Mercenaries and continues to this day with guest appearances, Paranoid Visions and a new band called Slice of Life. All Steve's bands worked basically for no money but the music endured and will always rock and will always mark a moment in time with true freedom and true greatness. They had to sleep on a lot of hard floors and use some toilets unfit for humanity but looking back on it, that makes the triumph all the greater. We wouldn't have our rock and roll any other way would we?

A current of violence runs through the whole book: pointless aggression that comes from the great confusion of being alive, and being too scared to show love and break away from our animal and territorial origins. It's a long road. Are we even halfway there? Have we even started moving? CRASS did. Try to catch up to them.

Sandra Opdycke

Sandra Opdycke is the associate director of the Institute for Innovation in Social Policy at Vassar College. A student of Mark Carnes, she received her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1995 and has lectured and written extensively on urban history, women's history and public health, including No One Was Turned Away: The Role of Public Hospitals in New York City Since 1900 (Oxford, 1999) and The Routledge Historical Atlas of Women in America (Routledge, 2000). She has also contributed 70 essays to American National Biography (Oxford, 1999), which was edited by authors John A. Garraty and Mark Carnes.�

If you would have mentioned the name “Jane Addams” three weeks ago, my response would’ve been a confused, “What?” After reading her biography by Sandra Opdycke, I ask myself, “What not?”

Addams, often regarded as the mother of social work, did everything; from founding one of the first settlement houses in the U.S. - Hull-House - and empowering women globally to her international attempts to bring peace, she contributed to many major social issues. And although she had experienced personal failure and tragedy earlier in life, she later succeeded in helping herself, her neighbors, and the world.

This book, which is based on extensive original research, including discussions with psychiatrists, parents and 'internet-addicted' young people, explores the conflicting attitudes which this issue reveals. It contrasts the views of young people who see internet use, especially gaming, as a welcome escape from the dehumanising pressures of contemporary Chinese life, with the approach of those such as their parents, who medicalise�internet�overuse and insist that working hard for good school grades is the correct way to progress. The author shows that these contrasting attitudes lead to battles which are�often fierce and violent, and argues that the greater problem may in fact lie with parents and other authority figures, who misguidedly apply high pressure to enforce young people to conform to the empty values of a modern, dehumanised consumer-oriented society.

Hilarious! a quick and easy read.

The author has a real talent for sharing the misguided behaviors and attitudes that occur in various gym settings, which are expounded upon in a twisted and hilarious fashion. It's a fast and easy read. I definitely recommend it for experienced "gym rats" or even you have never been to a gym before, but you might not immediately connect the dots on some of the humor until you been there a while, then you will easily pick out the humor of the characters illustrated throughout this book.

PS: There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing curls in a squat rack!

Mechanics on a sound thermodynamic basis

Mechanician Gerard Maugin goes about describing the thermodynamic basis of continuum mechanics, focusing on small-strain elasto-plasticity and fracture, and taking a mathematical viewpoint. You would do well to have a background in continuum mechanics and possibly some functional analysis; Maugin makes heavy use of tensors and their accompanying indicial notation, and there are proofs that enlist the help of variational principles. That being said, I found this book to be an enlightening and thorough introduction to the topic. I would rate the prose somewhere on the above-average level of readability and reader engagement, but it isn't spectacular (so read this one with a cup of coffee close by). I enjoyed the brief history of each topic discussed, complete with references to the original papers (Hill, Rice, Woehler, E. Lee, Westergaard, von Mises, Prandtl, Barre de Saint-Venant, etc etc).

Those pesky laws of thermodynamics always apply, and so Maugin goes about explaining elasto-plasticity (mostly in metals) by using work and energy and the conservation thereof. Most of the time you can get away without due diligence for the first and second laws, but not all the time. For example, you will find a heat source at a crack tip, which is coupled to the work done by opening the crack itself. Plastic behavior (at the continuum/macroscale level) is defined to obey the laws of thermodynamics in the absence of better theories, and Maugin reviews the analysis behind such treatments. The link to thermal behavior is with some energy potential (usually Helmholtz free energy), which leads to a discussion of coupled thermo-mechanical problems. Given the nature of such a coupled beast, the discussion is rather terse compared to other topics. The largest shortcoming here is the treatment of numerical solutions of thermo-mechanical problems, but this is likely due to the book being nearly 20 years old. If you're on the market for information about thermomechanics, this book is right up your alley (even though it is a few years old)...but be aware that the audience is graduate-level engineers and applied mathematicians.
