Vindication Of A Genius

As a huge fan of Brian Wilson, I have long known of the album Smile. I bought Smiley Smile when it was released in 1967 and loved it. I enjoy it on CD to this day. In September of 2004, I pre-ordered Brian Wilson Presents Smile from Amazon in order to have it on the day that it was released, and I LOVED it! When The Beach Boys Smile Sessions were released, I bought them and also loved them. However, I have always understood and believed the false story that the failure of The Beach Boys to release Smile in 1967 was somehow caused by Brian's deteriorating mental condition. I have to admit that listening to the second CD of The Beach Boys Smile Sessions, I had found this to be very hard to accept, as it was obvious to me that he was in total control of these amazingly complex sessions. Domenic Priore has done a fantastic job of solving the question once and for all time. Brian Wilson [who did suffer mental and drug related problems in the early 1970's] was NOT having these problems in 1966-67, and they did not cause the delay, then non-release of Smile. The problem with the release of Smile was caused by Capitol Records, the legal situation and lawsuit against Capitol Records by The Beach Boys for cheating the group out of earnings, and jealousy and bitterness by the other Beach Boys, especially Mike Love. For their own reasons, they conspired against Brian Wilson to prevent The Beach Boys from releasing this brilliant album. I have read enough stories about the music industry to understand the greed and stupidity of the corporate music business. What happened to Brian Wilson and his incredible album is an unbelievable shame. This brilliant book lays the story open for all to see. Why believe it? Well, the truth is in the albums Brian Wilson Presents Smile, The Beach Boys Smile Sessions, Brian Wilson from 1988, and his brilliant 2015 album No Pier Pressure. He is still a genius.

Great look at the story behind the wonderful lost Beach Boys album

This is a very engaging account of the story and context behind one of
the most legendary unreleased albums in pop music history, Brian Wilson
and the Beach Boys' "Smile", a version of which was finally assembled,
newly recorded and released in 2004.
Some fans have taken issue with certain factual details in the book, but
author Domenic Priore, a longtime Southern California music culture obser-
ver, writer and booster, who was responsible for an early resurgence of
interest in the album with his 1989 scrapbook/expanded 'zine "Look,Listen,
Vibrate, Smile" has succeeded in conveying the sense of musical exploration, unbounded potential, hope, and eventual collapse of the project in the overall context of its time, and the story behind its eventual embrace by the public and its creator, who, with help and sup-
port from musical colleagues and family members, finally came to terms
with the weight of legend and expectation surrounding it and recorded
a new iteration of it recently.
I recommend the book highly, especially for those who are discovering
the music for the first time, as well as his aforementioned previous
book.

Enjoyable read

It started off a little slow and gets a little technical at times but about halfway through it got really good and talked a lot about some of the behind the scenes stuff. If you're already a fan you'll have heard a lot of it but great for any Brian fan. Of course a fascinating topic and would recommend the book. 3 stars for the first half and 5 for the second half equals 4.
