Brown, an up-and-coming motivational speaker, a.k.a. The Motivator, here offers his personal growth message in print. Once labeled educationally mentally retarded, he has been a sanitation worker, disk jockey, activist, state legislator, and night club emcee. Through his "Nine Principles of Life Enrichment," he proposes that anyone can succeed by stoking the fires of hunger for a dream. Brown's belief in our responsibility for our own success at times suggests a Pygmalion complex. Some of what Brown says can be found in a slightly different arrangement in Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Successful People ( LJ 3/15/90), Richard Gillett's Change Your Mind, Change Your World ( LJ 7/92), and Gilbert Brim's Ambition ( LJ 2/15/92). Having participated in four PBS specials, Brown may be familiar to many patrons. Public libraries should have this title in their self-help sections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/92.

About the Author
Les Brown came up the hard way. He and his brother were adopted at the age of six weeks by a single woman and raised in the Liberty City section of Miami, Florida. In the fifth grade, Les was mistakenly declared "educably mentally retarded." In spite of these conditions, he became a disc jockey, a community activist, and later served three terms in the Ohio State Legislature, becoming chairman of its Human Resources Committee. He is an internationally acclaimed speaker and has had five PBS television specials.

Good book but it seems a bit redundant to me

I love Les Brown and I listen to his speeches and have bought some of his previous books. To me it seems that if you listen to enough Les, eventually it will become redundant. And you can't blame him I mean there's only so much new material you can come up with from your past over the course of 30+ years of doing motivational speeches but...yeah. If you're new to Les Brown or haven't really heard much of his material (or if you have OCD and want to have a complete collection of Les Brown books) then I would recommend. Otherwise, not so much...

Empowering!

This is an excellent book. It is very motivating and empowering. It also helps you process through and rethink some of your blocks to success. One of the things I appreciate most about Les Browns message is that he is very upfront about how very hard it can be while you are working toward your dream. I always thought that hitting a lot of obstacles was a sign from the universe that it wasn't meant to be. What I'm learning is that change, any major shift in life is very painful. But that doesn't mean it is not for the best. And from what I hear it doesn't mean that things won't work out. You have to keep going. Most people don't keep going. They give up. I should also note that my dream is a personal one,not a professional one, and I still found this book extremely helpful.

Inspiring and Informative - A good book for just about anyone!

Les Brown's story is inspiring. I love the way he weaves his story with the lessons he learned. It is positive, offering much advice on making your dreams come true. On page 184 under the heading "Hold the Upper Hand," he shows you how positively charged people hold the upper hand. In two lists he shows you the negative charged attitude and the positively charged attitude. I found it helpful to see the contrast. This book covers many topics that are holding us back in fulfilling our dreams. I am reading black authors this month and this is by far the best book I read. The end of the book contains a "Live Your Dreams Action Planner." This is a book I will read again! Watch Les Brown on YouTube he is a fabulous speaker and motivator.
