Finite math blah

This was an alright book for finite math. The book did contain real examples (a positive) along with tons of formulas that I'm not sure that I'll ever see again. The probability stuff was good from this book, but some of the explanations were lacking clarity. Some of the topics include: Finance, linear programming of the simplex method and geometric approach, graphs, trees, counting, statistics along with relations and functions.

About the Author
David H. Barlow is an internationally recognized expert and leader in clinical psychology, having pioneered many treatments and investigations in anxiety and mood disorders. Currently Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry at Boston University, Dr. Barlow is also founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, one of the largest research clinics of its kind in the world. Previously, he was Distinguished Professor at State University of New York at Albany. From 1975 to 1979, he was Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Brown University, where he also founded the clinical psychology internship program. From 1969 to 1975, he was Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he founded the Medical School psychology residency program. Dr. Barlow received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. from Boston College, and his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association as well as the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science, which honors individuals for their lifetime of significant intellectual achievements in applied psychological research.

V. Mark Durand is known worldwide as an authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders. He is a Professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he was the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Durand is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received over $4 million in federal funding to study the behavior problems in children with disabilities. Previously he served in a variety of leadership positions at the University at Albany, including founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (all in psychology) at the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook. Dr. Durand received the University Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Albany in 1991, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2007. Currently a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Autism Society of America, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and has written 10 books as well as over 100 publications on functional communication, educational programming, and behavior therapy. Dr. Durand developed a unique treatment for severe behavior problems that is used worldwide. Most recently he developed an innovative approach (Optimistic Parenting) to help families work with their challenging children. He was named a 2014 Princeton Lecture Series Fellow and received the 2015 Jacobson Award for Critical Thinking from the American Psychological Association for his body of work in the field of autism spectrum disorder.

Not like you have a choice if you're taking the class...

I will say this, "Abnormal Psychology: An Integrated Approach" is certainly one of those textbooks I'll hold on to and read again after this semester is over. The information is easy to imbibe and the presentation, frankly, makes the book easy to read. I've found myself for the first time in a long time ahead of the class readings, and I got the book late!

Actual Review of the Book (Not on the Seller)

I'm writing this review because other reviewers in their attempt to bash the shipping from the seller are giving the actual book bad reviews.

The book is great and informative. It really is an easy read for the material that it covers. Of course, the reader must also have some prior knowledge in psychology to make the reading more accessible.

This is the assigned book for my Abnormal Psychology course at school and in order to register for the course there are prerequisites that must be met.

The book is also filled with graphs and photos that make the material more understandable and applicable.

Terrible printing quality

this addition of the book is printed on cheap paper and text runs all the way into the middle of the book. You have to fold each page all the way down to get the last two words and is really an issue.

Primer of statistics - not specific to biostatistics

This book showed up in my med school library today and I read most of it in about an hour. Not that I'm anything special in terms of reading speed, it's just not as dense as most stat books. That's a good thing, mostly - the author has an engaging writing style that's approachable. He goes over a large number of statistical tests, applying them to problems such as predicting martian weights for a given height. Yep, Martians. And plotonians, when the tobacco companies are forced to market further afield. But he is pretty step-by-step which is good for an intro.

What is the standard deviation? When would you use a t-test? Why p < .05? If those are new concepts to you then I think you'd find it useful. He makes the point in his intro that many people just accept journal article results. Maybe that's his tie-in to biostats - if you are reading biostats articles then you need to know stats?

To me, if you're looking to learn about biostatistics, I say keep looking. While the author does use examples that relate to living things, such as the effect cell phone radiation on rabbit sperm, it's got very little to do with the business of biostatistics. He's got so many elements in there to let you calculate stats by hand (or to use programs that appear on the accompanying CD-ROM) that it fluffs up the book unnecessarily. Personally I'd just get a Schaum's outline which will give you the opportunity to practice the concepts and then an actual biostats book to learn more about the field. Or maybe get this book along with a schaum's guide so you'll at least be able to work with the concepts. Here's one I picked up - it's cheap. Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics, 3rd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series)

So, high marks for readability, as an introductory stats book, but when you try to think about reality - when the relationships between what you are trying to predict and all of the things you hope predict that thing aren't perfect it shows that it's only 250 useful pages and in the end it's just what it says, a primer but of statistics, not biostatistics.

So confusing

I minored in mathematics in undergrad and aced biostatistics there. This book has SO many mistake (class makes a game out of finding them) and I don't mean the grammatical ones. Where did this guy learn to write? Run-on sentences galore are compounded upon his misuse of terminology (i.e calling a group a "population" and failing to mention he changes his definition by chapter 3 on what that is)

This is a great book. I already have a copy. I purchased this book for a friend who is out of work. In my view, it is the most down-to-earth book that covers how to look for a job and get noticed. Essentially, the idea is that you treat finding a job as a marketing effort, marketing yourself as the solution to a problem. You are the product. Your potential employer is your prospect. Your resume and cover letter are your marketing materials. You need to tailor your job search to the company to whom you are applying and show them how hiring you will solve their problem (i.e. what you can do for them). It is a brilliant work and I highly recommend it.

Now, I'm using it again as I look for the perfect PT job to support me while I work as an indie author...first book published and I'm starting to get requests for interviews!

A lot of the information is common sense and information that a seasoned job seeker knows already. After a few pages, I put it down because it was not interesting enough.

In my current job search, networking has really worked and when I apply through a company website I make sure that I tailor my resume and provide a cover letter. I understand that 2% of cover letters are read, but it can be a deciding factor if offer the job.

Good luck to the job seekers, but I would not recommend that you purchase this book.
